Current is strong there as you are passing both the Calibogue Sound (water dumping from May River)  and Savannah River (fairly large shipping port). But it's not unbeatable and easily managed. I lived on Hilton Head and would load up my Hobie 16 with a cooler full of beer and sail to Tybee Island so that I could drink on the beach (not allowed on Hilton Head). Then I would sail back at the end of the day. I saw a few distance swimmers make the 7 mile swim as well. Actually now that I SUP I wan't to go paddle it.  ;D

Little brother is visiting and it was storming yesterday so I had some free time. Decided to throw together the past couple weeks of paddling clips. Hope you all enjoy!

Leash is definitely most important (although not required by law)

Strap an inflatable to your waist, it doesn't hurt and you will forget its there until you actually need it. Plus without it you are breaking the law in the US. Most states (not Hawaii) have their own laws but the USCG law covers everywhere in the USA. So you are breaking at least one law, if not two, by not having it.

pugsup what year astro touring did you have? I demoed one (mostly flat water) and didn't have any tracking issues and it felt really stiff, I'm actually planning on buying one. I'm wondering if they changed the board or fin or something?

2012 ruckus..  awesome cruiser. very steady.. easy way to roll to the beach with my sup

Couple guys at my work got ruckus's. They look like fun! I'm considering picking one up to head to work and back (4 miles down the beach). What kind of racks do you have?

+1 for ACA. I was VERY impressed with their training compared to other organizations, much more organized. I've done a few of them (will leave out names to prevent a flame war) and can by and far recommend ACA as the best I've taken.

Thanks cove! glad to see you are enjoying your OC just as much as your SUP! There aren't very many used OC's here on the east coast of Florida unfortunately (especially not good ones). I had the opportunity to paddle one for the first time yesterday but only got around 5 minutes on the thing. If you can't tell by my goofy grin, I really enjoyed it. I was too giddy to pay attention to my technique so ignore that. It felt really stable so I wasn't even sure if I could huli it... tried and succeeded. Once it starts to tip it sure does go fast.  :D

I can see where this would be really fun riding the bumps offshore. This was an Allwave Helium. I also got to try a Paddle Sports International Kaolele but that felt way too big for me ( I weight around 165 LBS or so). Guess I need to start researching brands.

Training, Diet, and Fitness / Buying an OC-1???
« on: June 25, 2014, 01:00:51 PM »
So I love paddling.... I paddle surf before work and during my lunch break if the waves are good, and then I paddle flatwater and strong currents after work and weekends. A day or two a week I throw in DragonBoat to mix things up.

I don't want to get bored of SUPing and have considered buying an OC-1 to throw in another paddling discipline. Is it worth it? Is it different enough from SUP to keep my excitement or will I never use the thing (like my sit-on-top kayak)?

Doing frequent training on the OC-1 seems to work well for Danny Ching (while I'm not like him, if I could somehow gain 12% of his talent I'd be happy). So for those of you that have both, do you find it exciting to mix it up? or does that old OC-1 just sit in the garage? thanks!

heres their website - http://www.mhlcustom.com/     Artistically some of the best looking boards i've ever seen. I'd be afraid to scratch them  :P    I haven't been on one but did see a new one built in the past couple months and it looked to the eye to be of good build quality. There is a guy in our Facebook group from Charleston that just picked his up at the Rincon Beach Boy race this past weekend. From what I saw through his interactions they seemed to have very good customer service and sent him pictures of his board throughout the build. It was custom built for him after speaking with MHL about various widths and what he was looking for. While I cant attest to the speed of the board, I will say it looked beautiful. And the prices seemed to be extremely reasonable for a custom built carbon board.

Yea I caught a couple waves on one of the carbons and stood next to someone else surfing it for a long time. It's a cool little board. I think it would be a good 'all rounder' board if the person was leaning more towards flat water/touring and only wanted to catch a few waves every now and then. It's smaller so would probably make a great board for smaller women or kids. If you wanted to fit in the rec class (under 12'6 surf shape) this board would dominate. It almost feels like a displacement board and would be hard for people to beat you on the normal 10'5-11' surf shapes.

I think it fits a very niche market though. Maybe it will fit inside SUV's at 12'2 instead of 12'6? I dunno, for me I'd rather have a true surf shape and a 12'6 so I can fit in a true racing class. Like you said, it's a board that's a LOT OF FUN but doesn't quite fit in any exact discipline. The guy that has one lives just down the road so if you have any specific questions I'd be happy to relay them for you.

If someone jumps on my board I'm not going to let it slide

If you jump on someones wave they aren't going to let it slide....

In all seriousness though - I wouldn't do this either as I'm not one for physical confrontation. I'd try calling the paddler out on it first and then if he didn't stop, continued to drop in on others waves and someone else decided to jump on his board, I probably wouldn't be upset about it. Without knowing the details, this doesn't sound like a SUP vs Longboard deal. Sounds like one dude dropped in on another guy.

Shoals, with all respect, I think you are missing the deference between 'Federally controlled waters' and 'Navigable Waters'.

2.36 Navigable waters of the United States, navigable waters, and territorial waters.
(a) Except as provided in paragraph (b) of this section, navigable waters of the United States, navigable waters, and territorial waters mean, except where Congress has designated them not to be navigable waters of the United States:
(1) Territorial seas of the United States;
(2) Internal waters of the United States that are subject to tidal influence; and
(3) Internal waters of the United States not subject to tidal influence that:
(i) Are or have been used, or are or have been susceptible for use, by themselves or in connection with other waters, as highways for substantial interstate or foreign commerce, notwithstanding natural or man-made obstructions that require portage, or
(ii) A governmental or non-governmental body, having expertise in waterway improvement, determines to be capable of improvement at a reasonable cost (a favorable balance between cost and need) to provide, by themselves or in connection with other waters, as highways for substantial interstate or foreign commerce.
(b) Navigable waters of the United States and navigable waters, as used in sections 311 and 312 of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act, as amended, 33 U.S.C. 1321 and 1322, mean:
(1) Navigable waters of the United States as defined in paragraph (a) of this section and all waters within the United States tributary thereto; and
(2) Other waters over which the Federal Government may exercise Constitutional authority.

I would look very hard at where you paddle and make sure they don't meet any of those. If they don't then yes you can just stick with the Maryland state rules. But for places like Lake Winnipesaukee, Lake Winnisquam, Merrimack River and many others, the USCG regulations must be met. And they can really get you with the 'past commerce' thing. I was told on a river in Georgia that the coast guard was allowed there because pre Civil War that there was commerce on the river. Yea I rolled my eyes at that one.
