SoCal / Purchased a board for Xmas« on: December 31, 2013, 07:35:50 AM »
It's been nearly a year of renting and borrowing different boards. I finally bought one that was within my budget. 404 was blowing out their race boards over xmas so I bought a 12' 6". Blue was out of stock so I picked green. I didn't enjoy the yellow one very much. I also was able to score a really good deal on a used QB Elite carbon paddle locally. Wish I could pick up a 12' 6" or 14' Infinity but that will have to wait. However, I thoroughly enjoyed this past year as I was able to test a number of different boards and paddles to get an overall feel. It's been interesting incorporating outrigger paddle strokes with SUP. I can't get over that mental block but that is another topic. Happy New Year everyone!

Good friend of mine convinced me to try out outriggers along with the SUPing that I do. I recently joined a novice team out of NAC and the last two practices has seriously kicked my ass. Bob Woods is a great coach who is able to provide not only verbal corrections but easy to understand mechanical comparisons to help me understand what I'm doing wrong. This can easily transfer to the SUPing that I'm doing now. Regardless, good times, new people to meet, and paddling lessons!

I've been an avid mountain biker for years. I honestly have not touched my bike in nearly 4-5 months due to burn out. Hopping on a SUP is a good mix up for me.

No reason for me to start a new thread as the following is within the NAC area. I've been pretty busy so sorry if these articles are a few days old:

Not exactly gear but I suppose this book can compliment your gear. A buddy loaned me his book. I cracked it open last night and thumbed through a few chapters. I enjoy the authors refreshing approach versus commercialized magazines. If you have a recommended read post here or shoot me a PM.

SUP General / Re: SUP - Growth Accelerating« on: July 29, 2013, 12:55:54 PM »
Around the SoCal region I've seen a number of shops carrying SUPs and a surprising number of van based business renting and selling SUPs along the coast. I personally don't have statistics but I generally SUP 1-2 times a week and I do see regulars but I also see the influx of new people that want to try it out and I never see them again. Larger retail chains like the Costco and REI tend to do heavy advertising for SUP combos. Overall, it's popular for people to 'try' but obtaining a sale I'm not so sure.

Sharing a few pics from this morning. I'm certain a few of you may have launched from here. Fairly cold with light rain....

Thanks everyone!
@Supsnork: yes NAC is at Newport Beach. Parking is free there and the monthly pass is $60 versus paying $20 per hour for a SUP. I plan to be there tomorrow morning as I wanted to try a displacement hull this time around. Thanks for the Laguna tip!
