Gear Talk / Re: dome or flat
« on: January 31, 2013, 07:42:37 AM »
Huge fan of domes.  I tend to ride smaller SUP's and the domed deck contributes to a much more lively feel... I have my shapers pack the volume into the center, and taper down so the rails are sharp and bite.

Less ankle movement needed to lay it over on a rail.

SL

I totally agree with this for any serious surfer that wants the most performance out of their board.

I don't really know him that well but I've surfed with him a few times. He is a super nice guy, humble, and a fantastic surfer and paddler. Freakishly talented actually. On top of his water skills, he ran the Honolulu marathon barefoot and in boardshorts in about 3:30 hrs.

After I stripped the wax and before I put the pad on, I put a whole can of Monster Paint on the board. It wasn't as grippy as I would have liked. I probably should have put some wax over it but didn't think of it at the time. Took forever to strip all the Monster paint off as well.

Hey John,

Last year I had a 10'2" shaped with polyester/PU and glassed heavy. I rode if for a while with wax only and that combo was honestly the most natural feel of any SUP I have ever ridden. I eventually broke down and put a traction pad on it because it would get hot here in Hawaii and the wax would start to melt off at the feet. Doesn't quite feel the same with the pad on but I've taken a deck pad off before and not keen to do it again.

I think everyone should have a singlefin PU noserider in the quiver and wax it for a more traditional trip every now and then.

No leash the entire time either.

What makes it even more impressive is that he's in his 50's and only has one good eye. Lost the other surfing.

This thread reminds me of a post a while back where Blane discussed some of the shady business practices going on in the industry to the point where he was running with a sig that said something like "be an honest business person".

At any rate, some mass produced molded boards are great and very versatile but I'm over them for now. I'd rather talk to a shaper in person and get something dialed into my personal style and abilities for where I surf.

Asking what tail shape is faster is like asking what color is faster..  ;D

DJ

Everybody knows red is faster.

My quiver history:

11' 7" Angulo Nui
10' 6" PSH hand glassed All Arounder shape
10' 6" PSH hand glassed big wave All arounder shape
11' Foote production
10 " PSH hand glassed
9'8 " custom PSH
10' 6" PSH molded All arounder
8"8" Joe Blair Custom
9' 10" PSH Ripper
9' 6" PSH Wide All Arounder
9' 6" PSH All Arounder
11' 7" Tropical Blends/Kyle Bernhardt production
9' 6" Tropical Blends/Kyle Bernhardt production
10" custom PSH Balsa ripper
12'2" custom Bernhardt Outer Reef charger

I'm sure I've left one or two out. It's fun trying out different boards and learning how each works.

Random / Re: Toyota Tacoma - 4cyl

That's a nice ride. My friend had one around that year and he loved it. His wife convinced him sell it to get a Lexus SUV and he regrets the decision.

On a side note, I wish Toyota would put an electric sliding rear window on the Tacoma. They have it on the Tundra Crewmax. I'd buy it in a heartbeat and put a camper top on to store my boards in.

SUP General / Re: Safety Features?

I'm a big fan of anything that makes you safer.  Helmets, leashes, and floatation are all helpful and should be encouraged.  Leave the ego in the car.  Safety first.

Evan

Great but the point Ponobill brings up is all that safety gear may or may not encourage you to take greater risk, potentially negating the effects of the safety gear in the first place. I think it's a point worth considering. A personal example is when I surf a longboard without a leash, I'm very careful and catch waves that I'm certain I can make and are clear of people on the inside if I don't make it. I've probably lost a board half a dozen times that I can recall and each time there was no one any where near it. However, surfing with a leash, I'll take off on sketchier waves. I've had the leash fail and the board come very close to hitting someone a couple times.

And I don't think ego is always to blame. Sometimes it just feels better to surf in a minimalist state without all that gear on. That's why I still surf regular surfboards. Look at the alaia movement. Guys are riding a board with no leash, no fins, no rocker, no nothing.

I recently surfed Sunset and I noticed several old timers surfing without leashes. They were noticeably more calculated in their approach than everyone else. They usually sit further outside and take off when perfectly positioned. Never saw any of them lose a board, while guys with leashes would eat it left and right, myself included.

"it is necessary that every individual take a very critical look at their own skill level and accurately estimate their own personal level of acceptance in the lineup."

This seems to be the unwritten rule on Oahu. Hope it stays that way. It would be a bummer if it came to what you guys are doing on Maui.

Gear Talk / Re: Board weight
« on: November 30, 2009, 06:53:21 PM »
My windsurf boards were always in the 12-13lbs range SUPs should at least be that as well.

Depends on your local conditions and your personal style I think. The bigger, rougher, windier the conditions, the more a heavy board becomes a blessing.

With an 11lb board your swing weight is reduced making it easier to snap turns and such but you lose glide and I would have to imagine durability as well.

I use a 12' creatures of Leisures anytime is a few feet OH, it is 3/8" and very strong. It also has SS swivels against weaker brass on other brands.

I broke another Dakine Kainui the other day at Himalayas and it was a long fishy swim in heavy water. Just picked up a Creatures of Leisure 10' Outer Reef as a replacement. It has a couple features I really like. 1st the cord is thicker than any other leash I've found on the market. 2nd, it has a really easy to grab quick release tab. 3rd and most important in my experience, the terminal is engineered to dampen initial shock of the wave. I've now broken 5 or so of the thickest Dakine leashes and they've all been at the terminal.

Also, the rail saver is much wider. The whole thing in general looks bomb proof.
