Board maintenance
« on: February 20, 2016, 08:50:03 PM »
Hey everyone,
any tips on keeping your SUP clean and in good condition after use?
I usually just whip mine down with a towel when I get out of the water but I want to clean up the dirt, some scratches and other blemishes. Anyone have a good method they use to maintain it? Any sort of cleaning spray I should use?

Just a rinse and keeping it out of prolonged exposure to sunlight is all you really have to do.  Keeping it in a board bag will greatly reduce dings and scratches.  It's also a good idea to weigh your board new, establish a benchmark weight, and then weigh your board often to watch for weight gain.  That's the best way to make sure it is staying dry inside.  Some SUPs tend to get mystery leaks and slowly take on water without your knowledge and that's bad.

I keep my boards looking like new by giving them a rinse with fresh water and a gentle rub with one of these if there're any marks.. http://www.chux.com.au/the-chux-range/chux-magic-eraser-range/extra-thick-magic-eraser/index.html

Mr Clean Magic Eraser also works great for removing stains and black marks. It's very soft and can't damage the board no matter how hard you rub.

I store my boards stacked upside down on saw horses in the garage. I try to rinse them in the water where I paddle before bringing them home.

If I bring them home with sand or mud on them, I rinse them off with the hose.

I keep my leashes very clean and never let them touch the ground if possible. When I get home, I open the velcro to let it dry.

I also rise with fresh water ever time. I use a kitchen stainless steel surface polish which comes in a bottle to remove paddle scuffs. You can also use any metal based polish (like Brasso or Silvo). The other thing I have found is good for nicks is Marine Gelcoat repair paste.

Water rinse to remove ocean scum and salt - and a sit to allow the deckpad to dry out.  This cuts mildew buildup in the board bag from a salty wet board.  Automotive polish to remove scuffs and protect the gloss finish - keeping the board look good year after year.

Keep out of the sun that is it. I will break or trash any board, race or sup, from user error long before it succumbs to wear and tear.

I have used Mr. Clean Magic Eraser....it works fine... only cautionary note to add, is that if you rub too hard, and depending upon your paint quality, you may find more paint on the eraser pad then you want.... go easy at first, then examine, and carefully apply pressure.

I hadn't thought of that. I've never owned a board with paint that would come off.

That's definitely something to be aware of.
