Just heard a commercial about a reality show about people doing stupid things to be on a fake reality show. Back in the 50's when censorship and educational requirements of television was being debated the concern was that TV would decline to appeal to the lowest common denominator. I think they were being optimistic. I remember science fiction that posited when TV had hundreds of channels that programmers would resort to porn to get viewers. I thought it was farfetched and unlikely. I was being optimistic.

It's the WalMart phenomenon--aiming at the bottom of the market drives out quality.
