I think I was kinda pissed because that year they had all these other awards for a year round, mountain community multi-sport (Trail running, snow shoeing, mountain biking, and paddling) competition that included about a 1/8 of the competitors. All the paddlers sat around for hours till they got to the paddle only awards. It was hot and kinda brutal. I spoke to the race organizers (who are friends of mine) about it. The next year they did the paddling awards only. That paddle was way too short for me anyway.

It's a huge amount of work, and a thankless task to put on a big event, but so many organizers toss it all away at the end. Everyone views the award ceremony as an afterthought, but that's what plants the seed for the next year.

On a sort of related note…

I got a promotional card in the mail from the local Ducati motorcycle dealer about an upcoming demo day. I took the card in with me on that day, and there was like nothing going on. I managed to get a ride, but I came back after pretty much just going around the block.
