Kai's SUS ride at Jaws this last swell
« on: November 14, 2014, 09:03:36 AM »
http://standupjournal.com/kai-lennys-sick-ride-of-the-year-entry-at-jaws/

Interesting to see this and him wrestling with some uneven surface conditions.  I've noticed it at the smaller spots I ride.  There one point where, as much as he's being careful with his turn, he still loses traction with his fins for a moment.  Love the attempt at the mogul jump at the end.

He looked like I felt this morning--riding the wind coming up the face, not the wave. Of course my board is twice as wide as his. Maybe three times, And the wave I was on was one third the size of Jaws. Maybe four times. Otherwise exactly the same.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

Why doesn't he ride a more suitable board for the wave? Better off on a gunny SUP perhaps?

What do you mean by more suitable board? I'm pretty sure he's riding a Naish Hokua Gun and I don't think anyone else is making as "gunny" a gun as Naish: http://www.naishsurfing.com/product/hokua-910-le-gun

Better riding a longer thinner gun surely.....his board was skipping all over the place.....you could see he was having issues keeping it from flying up. I'm not taking anything away from the ride....awesome...and reckon he is the most talented all round SUP guy on the planet.....just making an observation and adding to the discussion. Didn't look like a 10ft gun to me?

It was rough and anything would have bounced around.  Bigger waves are often a gravel road.

I dunno, its a big wave and a big board and thats a lot of water moving around. I think about the only thing that wouldn't bounce as much would be a little tow-in board.

Here he is on the same day prone paddling the same board into a biggin without his sup paddle...

Hmmm, unless he somehow took the deck pad off and changed the graphics while he was out on the water....I'm not thinking that's the same board.   :P :o

I think Kai is rad but...ride of the year?  That clip is an outtake.

There was an entire video of him scoring deep barrels on much bigger Jaws waves last year.  Standup as well.

I didn't get it either. Maybe Ride of the year so far this winter at jaws on a SUP  Add enough qualifiers and you got it. Like my wins at the BOP. Fastest guy over 60 on a weird board that no one else rides. Hell of a ride though, and a great start to the winter.

There was something about this last swell that was particularly bumpy. I'm sure it changed from place to place, but I don't remember ever having so many headaches after big waves. Whole lot of shakin' goin' on.
