JD: I guess I could find some industrial alligator clips and that'd work.  But, before I lost it, I did use the Croakie clips and found that when the hat blew off my head in the water, the tethering would stretch the rash-guard collar so much that I sometimes had a hard time locating the hat.  Go figure.

Think I'll give the Spookini noose method a go.  After all, what's the worst that could happen?  :D

STC: Pretty good waves yesterday morning at dawn -- long lines at Pilgrim -- but then the wind got on it and then the swell died.  Yeah, sad, nothing today.  I'm hoping that tomorrow's forecast for 1.4' @ 12 seconds will produce a little something.  kinda doubtful, tho....

Linter, not sure if you are looking for a hat to provide shade on your face, or strictly to provide cover for your scalp, but if the latter, try a neoprene beanie hat.

There are several on the market, and they seem to stay on pretty well (much better than a cap would). Not saying it won't fall off, but it does stay on better than any cap. Most of these offer a grommet for a lanyard too.

Search "wetsuit beanie" on Google, and you will find many options. Hyperflex makes a good one.

I'm gettin' funny dreams again and again
I know what it means, but …

no beanie for me, either.  ball cap or no cap, is my motto.  that being the case, and with a little spare time on my hands, i've decided to give the strangulation, hangman's noose method a go, as seen in the pix here, using elastic.  in theory, should the hat get snagged on a piece of coral or a shark's fin, the elastic should stretch out and pull itself free of the zip tie, allowing me to live to see another day.  like i said, in theory.
