Starboard Hero 9.0 x 33 ???
« on: September 24, 2013, 08:44:34 AM »
Hello, I'm a pretty experienced paddler, I like the waves, but where I live there are not very often, and when there are are small. So mainly with paddlesurf go cruising. Until now own a 10.6 Naish Nalu 150 liters and weighing 70 kg. I can use it to surf very well my small waves and even for small cruising. I would like to take a board easier to transport by car with the volume needed for cruising, I'm looking a used  Starboard hero 9 x 33, I think on small waves go just as well as my Nalu, only with shortboard feeling and not with longboardfeeling. My doubt is how much slower it is to paddle than my Nalu or if I've seen a few claims for this use is an acceptable thing?  ;)

Small waves and a Hero....hmmmm...I've not used one but do recall others on a diff forum saying the rocker makes the board go better on bigger surf and it isn't a cruiser.

I'm about 90 kgs and really like my Hero. It is not a cruiser, but i have no problem just paddling it about.  I really have to stand forward towards widest point on board when just paddling around, but at 70 kgs you probably won't have to. i think it will be a fair amount slower than your Naish, but after all, it is designed more for surf. it's my favorite SUP surf board and really doesn't require bigger waves, though i think that's where it truly excels. i can have a great time on it in 2 footers and up. i recently had a custom board made at 8'5" with more of a simmons inspired shape, and that type of board may be better for what you're looking for though i don't think you can wrong with the Hero.

Thank you very much, I know that the starbord is a compromise, but also my Naish despite being a 10.6 volume content and has accentuated scooprocker. The issue is finding the right balance, which I think does not exist between a short board, which makes proper surfing and that allows me little walks. I'm lucky to weigh little, I'll see if try starboard!

The hero allows a larger paddler access to a bigger beach breaks.  It sounds like you might be better off with a narrower longboard template, better suited for someone in the 70 kg range.  I've got a hundred plus pounds on you, crappy balance,  and I'd be fine with the hero in bigger surf or beach break (my board now is 9-5 x 33").  Perhaps something along the lines of a SB Converse, Element, or Nose Rider would work for smaller surf a bit better.

Where are you located?  That might help folks here point you to a local shop or give you area specific advice.

I've got a friend that's 80 kg and he rips it in 3 ft florida.  It'd prolly be fine for most wave sizes.

Just to add to anyone searching the forum on the hero it's a great board for learning to surf on and general flat water paddling. At 175 pounds it's great for both small wave surfing and flat water paddling. Plus Alaska will let you fly with it!

It seems to be that at 70kg you'd probably be a bit better with a Pocket Rocket.
It will also be a bit too big for you, but the Hero will be a real barge for someone your size.
As for the Hero itself, it's a very nice board for a 95-105 kg person who is not looking for high performance.
