SUP transport with Hullavator?
« on: May 27, 2011, 05:54:18 AM »
I just bought my first SUP!  Will be picking it up today.  I currently have a 2 person kayak which I transport on top of my truck with the Hullavator.  Can a SUP be transported with this apparatus safely?  Seems like it could since it's not near as heavy as my kayak, but I'm new to this sport... need advice...  :-\

You can use the Hullavator but you need to be careful how you secure the board to the J-bracket. SUP boards are not as thick as yaks and there is opportunity for the board to rotate within the bracket on a vertical axis. I have seen punctures in the bottom of a board caused from  too much pressure against the top of the J-bracket as well. If it was me, I would try and sell the Hullavator and get the new Thule SUP rack attachment. No worries with it holding your board.

I love my Hullavators.  Shouldn't be any issues as long as you pad the carriers and/or use a board bag.  Not really sure how you poke a hole in your board with one.

If you search, it has been mentioned a few times.  Here is one with pics

Well, got my board... it seems that it is TOO WIDE for my hullavator!  Ugh!!!  I have it at max width, and my board won't sit all they way down in it.  It's a 12 foot board from SUP ATX.

Another question... when I tie it down, should it be uprite or facing down???  I have seen them both ways.  Which is safer for the board??  Please advise....  ???

If you can spread your rails apart, you can load it on a narrower portion of the board.  If your tower points are fixed, then you may have to pad the upper cradle really well so it won't put dents on your board.  I would put the board on top down so any dent would form on the top.   front, back, forward, reverse all have their supporters.  I load however I walk up to the truck.
