"drop knee" turn (maybe cross step turn?)
« on: March 07, 2008, 08:30:14 PM »
Don't know the official name of the style of longboard turn on  a wave where if you ride regular stance, you keep your right (back) leg in place and drop your left leg to the back to do a turn on a wave ... drop knee turn? ... cross step turn?

Anyhow, i was practicing in flat water the other day and rather than shuffling towards the back of the board to do a turn, i would just drop my front(left) foot back and keep my right foot in place and use a stroke or two to turn.  After turning i would just return my left foot to the front position.  The right foot never leaves the original position.  This turn seemed to work good if you were already in a partial surfing stance while paddling out through the surf.  Just a quick dropping back of the front foot and a paddle stroke or two and your facing the other direction.  It did not feel as stable as a typical turn where you would shuffle your feet back to sink the board, but it looked stylish (i think?  or maybe not?).

Anyone else try this style of turn?  Or maybe everyone is doing this and i just reinvented the wheel here. Or maybe it is just not that practical since it seems a little less stable that the traditional way to turn for an incoming wave.

I'd like to hear if others have used this.

Your right it is a drop knee turn and works really well as you explained it.If you load up your legs the board comes around even quicker. Its all a bit harder in the surf trying to turn around to catch the big one though.
Cheers mate.

When frontside with paddle on the backside, the drop knee cut back rips a lot!

this is an older video of Ivan van Vuureen doing some drop knee stuff--looks like mushy thousand peaks waves.

I love doing drop knee turns, my problem is that i can't get back up again without help.

That could be me, I think I have a pair of trunks like that. I've actually thought a lot about taking one of my boards and putting a seat and mirage drive well in it, but it will be for fishing. It will need a steerable fin too, or I could just drag a paddle. I think it's a project for Mark Raaphoorst. He's as nuts as I am.
