Being from the FL east coast and having a toddler, we decided to evacuate for Dorian as it approached us as a Cat 4 (and later a Cat5) storm. We went over to St. Petersburg on the FL west coast and figured we could do some boating and paddling over there since it was supposed to be nice weather on that coast and that's where our boat with paddleboards lives anyway. Well, ironically, we ended up getting caught in a nasty squall, complete with hail (thankfully our son wasn't with us!). Check out this video of the waves after it had calmed down enough to take a video: https://photos.app.goo.gl/an1xKykp6mBausRs8 We were really grateful for the Navionics app since we couldn't even see the Skyway Bridge much less the channel markers.
Anybody else have any crazy (or ironic) evacuation stories?

Headed out for some paddling this weekend with some friends. Ended up at an interesting place called Passage Key (per the Navionics map). Saw some.... interesting stuff... anyone know anything about this island?

For standup fishing and longer paddleboarding (non-fishing) treks, what do you prefer to use for navigation? Chartplotter unit, handheld GPS, mobile app?

For those of you that paddle in hurricane zones, you are well aware of the ravages that a Category5 hurricane can take on a coastline. After Hurricane Michael hit last year the waterways changed drastically. Navionics cartographers have now recharted Laguna Beach near Panama City on the westernmost coast of Bay County and the West coast of St. Teresa near the Florida State University Coastal and Marine Laboratory. If you boat in this area be sure to update your charts so you have the latest cartography data!

For those of you who also sail or are interested in sailing, the 35th America's Cup (Bermuda 2017) race route and on-water spectator areas are shown on Navionics charts. Whether you're a spectator or a participant this will help you get the best position. I'm hoping to make it out there. What are your America's Cup plans? And if you're already there, please share some stories!

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up: for those of you who use Navionics either for SUP or other adventures on/in the water, they have added 42 artificial reefs to their Maryland charts. If you update charts with your card or your mobile app you'll get this new information so go ahead and update your charts now if you are in that area.

For anyone who is interested in lobstering, I'll be giving a free webinar on Wednesday, February 22nd at 7pm EST entitled "Catching the Bug- Techniques for Finding, Catching and Eating Spiny Lobsters". I'll be discussing tips and tricks that I've learned and that others have shared with me over the years. Chiefy Mathie, author of "Catch the Bug" is going to join me as well to share some of his secrets. If you want to learn how to catch a lobster almost every time, then join us on Wednesday! Here's the link to register: https://navionics.zoom.us/webinar/re...2040ba88984b7b

I checked out the charts in New England... looks like lots of cool places to paddle. I am going for a week to New England (woohoo!). If you had only a week where would you paddle? (I am flexible in destination.)

As many of you know in South Florida, we received much less of Hurricane Matthew than we anticipated... Like 100mph less winds than anticipated. We only got about 40 mph winds where I am. So I wanted to try my hand at SUP in higher winds than I've ever tried... albeit, safely within the confines of Lake Osborne (super easy to get to shore if I need to!). Wow, it was so much harder than I anticipated. I ended up having to lie down to get back to my canal. LOL! Paddled like a surf board. That was the only way back! I wish I could have gotten a video but I was busting butt to even get back, muchless record a video. Anyone else try anything like this during a high winds storm? What was your experience?

There is a new wreck in South Florida that is close enough to shore to paddle to. In fact, there are a bunch of wrecks all together in this spot but this is a brand new one, just sunk. I added it to the Navionics chart using the Community Edits feature so you'll see it on your chart too if you update your chart in a few days to a week (however long it takes to get integrated into the charts). Be sure you've enabled community edits in order to see the wreck. Navionics also added wrecks to their charts a few months ago so I'm sure this one will be added to the main chart soon anyway but I figured I'd share it with ya'll now.

My twin sister is a beginner paddleboarder and she lives in NC. She is interested in the best places to go paddleboarding near Wilmington or Topsail Island. Any suggestions for her? Thanks!

My twin sister is coming to visit me in Florida in a couple of weeks. I took her on her first paddleboarding adventure when she visited me last year and she fell in love with it. Now she wants to visit some lakes in Florida. Fortunately, Navionics just added 44 more Florida lakes to its database so we have so many lakes to choose from we can't decide where to go. She is super excited about using her Navionics mobile app to track our route and distance since she has never used it while paddleboarding but we first have to decide which lakes to visit. What are your favorite lakes to paddleboard?
