Any tips on the best mobile air compressors to blow up iSUPs?   I've heard a few burn out.  Thanks.  RC

Generally the models that connect direct to your car battery (or optional lithium battery) work faster than those that connect via a car cigarette lighter socket due to the current limits of the socket (about 10Amps?).

Until about the middle of 2014 some of the bravo bp-12 were susceptible to piston melt down, they say they improved the design a little, let's hope so. The anticipated 22psi model has not surfaced yet...

There will be a few more brands and models out this summer, both high current direct to battery and powered from cigarette lighter socket. Most will be capable of 15psi, some about 20psi , I'll post some more info when I get more samples and news from the factories.

You really need two kinds of compressor to make this work well--a large volume, low pressure and low volume higher pressure. I tried a blower-type used for inflating air mattresses (came on an aeorobed that I scrapped) and it was fine for the volume--got up to 4-5 pounds very quickly and stopped. If you can add a piston pump after that you'd have all you need. If you run a piston pump for the whole cycle it won't live long.

I bought a VIAIR 85P for my vehicle from Aircompressorsdirect.com and am very impressed with it.  I've gone through quite a few cheapo units in the past.  This one was $70 and connects into your cigarette lighter.  Is rated at 14 amps which it only uses when it gets close to its max of 65psi.   The fuse is 15 amps in the lighter.  It doesn't dance around on the ground like some cheap ones and it is pretty quiet.  Didn't get too hot when topping off car tires in the 35 psi range.  I can't comment on the longevity yet I just bought it a few weeks ago.

Some reviewers are claiming this one does get their boards up to 15psi, but many say the hose is cheap.  Seems that could be replaced kinda easily if the pump works

we tested these in 2010, looks the same as what we tested :
originally designed for inflating rubber boats (max about 5psi?)
they had a lead-acid battery built in,
very heavy and slow charge times,
pump maxes out at 12psi and the internals of this broke pretty easy when they are pumping to 12psi on a daily basis

this one is looking ok, I agree the hose should be easy to fix, I've heard good things about them recently too :
I've heard they are quieter than the Bravo BP-12, but slower too.
I'm getting one for testing ASAP.

agreed on 2 stage pumps, there are some like this coming, and some single stage with better designed pistons.
that Coleman pump (linked above) is a single stage, but slow so it's performing ok so far for the people I've talked to (their most recent batch seems better too)

I just got a new compressor for my truck and it looks like it will work pretty good for my isup.

It is the Smittybilt 5.65 CFM Air Compressor
http://www.amazon.com/Smittybilt-2781-5-65-Universal-Compressor/dp/B004K25GMG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1428586114&sr=8-1&keywords=smittybilt+air+compressor

It is a little bit more expensive then others but it inflated my Red 12'6" Explorer from about 8 PSI to 18 PSI in about 5 minutes.  I am going to test it out this weekend and see how long it takes to inflate it from 0 to 20 PSI this weekend.

Post up your thoughts/review if you don't mind once you test.  I'm considering

test board : airSUP 12'6 x 30" x 6"

Coleman Sevylor single stage pump :
14psi : 8:20
15psi : 9:22
$50~60 online / amazon

Holee double stage pump :
14psi : 7:45
15psi : 8:25
(max is 20psi, takes another few minutes)
$120-140~ on amazon?
(re-branded by many)

Bravo BP-12 single stage pump :
says 14.5psi (actually about 13.5psi?) : 5:20
$100 - 200~ on amazon etc ?
(re-branded by many)

the Bravo seems loudest, followed by the Holee and the Sevylor seems less noisy
however using a dB meter on my phone , it reported they all average about 89dB

I've only used the Sevylor a few times, no problems so far.
Bravo had no problems since the end of 2014 batch seemed to clear most problems they had in earlier times.
Holee I've been using for about 6 months, my go-to pump until now, the 20psi is nice if you need it.
Waiting for Bravo to put out the 22psi version of the BP-12, hope it's not over stressed!

Thanks for that info airSUP.  So looks to me like the Coleman is the way better deal, simply because of the price point.  Does it seem sturdy?  Reviews complain about the tubing being cheap

You said " the Best" right?  Nothing to burn out, super fast and no motor sounds.
