Would you recommend a sup board for a big guy?
« on: December 28, 2010, 10:09:47 AM »
Hi,

I have read several posts about sup board recommendations for a big surfer boy. I have been surfing for 5 years but practiced sup for only 2 (mainly cruising). I am above 240 lbs (110 kgr.) weight and 6 feet height.

Now I would like to jump to surf easy waves (no choppy). Which small board would you recommend me? Does it have to have big volumen despite being small?

I would like to find a board "easy to handle", easy in waves, and that does not loose flotation/stability.

Thanks

VB

10ft. Starboard Whooper.  Can hold your weight, super stable, and a lot of fun in the waves.

I'll second that.
The Whopper would be a lot of fun
for someone your weight.

Pop into your local SUP shop and see if they have any demo boards that you can try.. Boards like the Starboard 10' Whopper and new 10'5" WidePoint and also the Naish 10' Mana and also the 10'5" Mana would all work well for you at your weight.

Welcome to the Zone..  :)

South County: http://www.southcountysurf.com/ - Great boards, excellent customer service, awesome performance. Just search this forum and you will hear the same.

Coreban Cruiser or the whopper will easily suit you.

Lots of big boy boards to choose from. I've tried the Whopper and liked it....I've heard a lot of good talk on the Mana's too. I love my South County 9er though. Never thought I'd go as short as 9' but this board has me thinking that even smaller is possible. I have a few inches and lbs on you and this board has plenty of float for me and I don't think you will find any boards that are more stable. I'm balance challenged and it lets me do things no other board has.
I've always told folks they should demo before buying but I bought this board without ever trying and its the best purchase I've made.

I'm of similar physical dimension and have tried a few different boards, so far the Naish Mana 10ft has been the best in small/choppy surf, haven't tried it in good surf yet, but am sure it would be fantastic.
