Winter Workout - Resistance bands?
« on: December 06, 2010, 12:42:16 PM »
Does anyone have a link to, or any suggestions about a good workout to maintain paddle fitness over the winter?  I travel a lot for work, and I'd like to put together a strength workout I could do in a hotel room.  Seems like resistance bands might be a good workout tool that I could fit in my suit case, and would get me the strength training I'm looking for.

The 10 lb dumbells are a bear to carry on.

Thanks,

Tec

I'd recommend the flow bar by my friend Steve "Mr. Wonderful"  Elbogen.

Have you ever seen the FourPace workout program?  There are versions for for use during trips:

full disclosure:  I was involved in the development of this program

If you travel the TRX Suspension System is a good option.  It packs up small in the carry bag (about 6"x6") and it really provides a great workout.  I got mine with the Navy Seal program because I liked the sand color vs the black & bright yellow. The only problem was that the SEAL work out was mega hard.

Forget about lugging around gear. Run to keep up the Cardio or us a stationary bike at the hotel. Workout the upper body doing push ups, decline push ups, bench dips, and sit ups if there is no gym. If the hotel gym has a concept 2 rowing machine, even better. You'll get Cardio and a full body workout.

That is the basic premise of the FourPace regimen... basic exercises down in specific order in circuits.  We have people doing it all over the world incl. ex national champ rowers.  And, it is free...

Swimming seems to really make connective tissue flexible. It's great cross training for paddling.  Long distance, like 2 miles.  Takes away all that stiffness from paddling.  Of course surfing makes it al fun.  But if you're in a hotel, put your goggles on and just go.  Builds mental endurance as well.  Swimming has paid off in spades for me.

Swimming is my main sport, and I'd choose it anytime over stretch cords.  It's great for everything, but for building strength it works better if you do some fast intervals, or some swimming with paddles.  Mixing up different strokes and speeds also is a lot better than just doing straight one-speed crawl stroke.  However, lots of hotel pools are so small that by the time you've pushed off, it's time to turn after only a stroke or two.  Or they're too hot to swim fast in.

Stretch cords might be used more by swimmers than any other athletes.  They are cheap, and seem to build strength without excess bulk.  You can do pretty much all the same basic exercises that you do with weights.  Stand on it to do curls, upright rowing or presses, or loop it around a bed leg (or anything really strong) and do flys, rowing, etc. either facing what it's looped to, or with your back to it.  You can increase the resistance by standing on more of the cord to make it shorter.

No other location other than e-mailing me directly at rpmooreii at yahoo dot com.  If you have an interest I can send you the overview of the program and some workouts

As others have said swimming is great cross training for all paddle sports.  While I am fairly new to SUP, I am a longtime OC-6, OC-1, and surfski paddler/coach with many, many races under my belt (including mult top 10 OC-6 finishes at Catalina).

No.  What is "shake a weight"?  Does it fit in a suitcase?

Body weight exercises no equipment required at a high intensity level with minimal rest in between sets or no rest at all. A jump rope if you can not every can maybe a good 5 percent can't handle or don't have the rhythm.high intensity intervals known as HIT with kettle bell or club bell or mace. Mace not that practical for traveling though.

I'd recommend P90X or Insanity, I've done both and at the moment I'm combining both of them together.  Great workouts and it will get you in more than enough shape for some SUP
