Uli 10' Steamroller vs. Uli 11'
« on: September 25, 2009, 05:27:10 PM »
I live on the east coast and have a Jimmy Lewis 11' SUP that I use for gliding on 2'-4' waves, as well as lake paddling and exploring coasts.  I am thinking to get an inflatable so I can travel with the board.  Research on the Internet seems to indicate that Uli makes one of the best inflatables, and I am deciding between a 10' Steamroller and an 11'.  I am 6" tall and weigh around 185 lbs.  I am a low intermediate level and 60+ years old, so I would like to grow old with this board.  Anybody have any thoughts on the difference between the 10' and the 11' Uli inflatable, especially since I am used to riding the 11'Jimmy Lewis.   What can I expect will be the difference between the two boards?

Thanks for your comments and assistance.

hi Stan

my advice is the ULI 11'...its very good for trimming across waves, gliding, lakes, general exploring and long distance paddling...it'll still surf and do all the fancy tricks if you want it to but it would much rather shoot across a wall and ride the wave all the way to the beach... :D

the ULI 10' wants to do all the fast turns, carves and tricks on the face of the wave...plus the glide is noticeably less than the 11'...

as for the difference between the JimmyLewis11' and the ULI11'...i dont have much info...the ULI will flex a bit when you jump up and down on it but not so much that it you cant ride waves or anything...its just a weird sensation to get used to at first...

anybody else??

Hi Stan - I Started with a Jimmy Lewis 11' and then bought an Uli 11' for travel. I now have a Steamroller 10 and a Lopez. If you want a 'similar' board to the JL go with the 11'r, if you want an alternative board that will still be stable but will offer a little more progressive wave action go with the Steamroller.

I blogged my first impressions of the ULI here http://csx355.blogspot.com/2008/01/uli-11-stand-up-paddle-board.html.  I have also put my thoughts on the Steamroller later in the blog.

One of my first impressions was the JL seemed to accelarate from rest faster but the ULI 11 was faster once at speed and held it's speed better.  Hope this helps - Steve.

Thanks so much for the two responses to my inquiry.  I just ordered an 11' Uli and can't wait to try it.  Thanks again............Stansurf

Stan:
I just wanted to jump in and give you another opinion.
If you already have a JL 11', why not go for the Uli Steamroller 10'

I have had my Uli 10' for just over a year.
I am 51 years old 6' tall and weigh a little over 200.
I use the board about 4-5 times a week in the ocean.
I inflate my board every time I use it. (the best pre-paddle warm up ever)

The Uli 10' is very stable, like Steamroller said it loves to play in the waves.
All the surfers at my home break don't worry about me surfing with them because my ULI is soft.
It may not be the fastest, best gliding ULI on flat water but that hasn't stopped me from entering the Battle of the Paddle race last year or many 5+ mile SUP touring sessions.
The Uli adjustable paddle makes it easy to change from a long touring paddle to a short surf paddle on the fly. A huge advantage!

River running, to the surf, to traveling around town or around the globe.
The Uli 10' is an amazing all around board!

So you need to paddle a little harder than a longer SUP.
Isn't that why we took up this sport, to get in shape and have FUN?

Run What Ya Brung...
Steamroller: are we ever gonna get to surf together?

I'll be there both days. It'd be great to meet you Clinton and Deon. Look for the big fat geezer with a Yellow and Blue tiger striped F18. I kind of fade into the crowd, but the board is hard to miss.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.
