Need adjustable paddle C4 Stendy or Kialoha Hinalea
« on: October 07, 2010, 12:23:04 PM »
I'll be sharing a board with my wife for a bit.  Need an adjustable paddle so we can take turns.

She's 5'2", I'm 5'7" so we need something that can go short enough for her to use while extending so I can use it.

Research shows the  C4 Stendy or Kialoha Hinalea are my options that will go down to ~68" for her.  The Werner and Quickblade adjustables won't go short enough unless I missed something.  Going up to 70" for her opens up other options but I don't want to stick her with a paddle that's too long.

Thoughts on these paddles or suggestions for others are appreciated.

Thanks

I was in the same situation..

My wife is 5'2", and I'm 5'6".  I had a fiberglass C4 that was perfect for her, but too short for me.  I would have just bought one for me, but selling the C4, and getting one made more sense..

On Tuesday picked up the Werner Nitro. adjustable from 74"- 78.5"..  Werner is saying 8" for surf and 10" or more (depending on thickness of the board) for touring.  The 74" would be my surf length, and 76" for cruising.  At the lowest setting, it would be 12" for my wife.

Both of us went out yesterday..  She didn't have any problem with the 74" length.

Love the paddle as well..  Could definitely tell the difference with the smaller blade, the "correct length" and the CF..

Don't know about the others, but I'm glad I went with that one..

If she is 5'2", I'd say 68" is probably on the short side unless she prefers a paddle that short.  Going up to 70" I doubt it will be too long.  She probably sits higher in the water than you do on the board as well.

Is she using it in the surf or just mellow flat water paddling?  Longer mo better for the flat water/cruising application.

Flat water for the forseeable future.

Glad I asked more options now.  Thanks.

Problem is...  A leap of faith...lol..

Most places don't have a demo paddle option..

Initially, if I didn't need adjustable, I was eyeing the qb kanaha, the kialoa methane and Shaka pu'u.  Heck, I was even looking at the adjustable Werner spanker.

As faith would have it, my hand was slightly "forced" into the nitro..  Funny how things have a way of working out..

If you were on oahu, I would let you try it out..

Here's some info that I posted some time ago about the adjustable Kialoa.

Here.. http://www.standupzone.com/forum/index.php?topic=2914.0

I still have mine and it's still working great.. It's mostly just used by friends that want to have a go at SUP.. The blade size and shape seems about perfect.

I just got 2 new paddles in this week.  I love them already and I haven't used them yet.  I went with 2 configurations.  1 is a 3 piece Werner Carve in 70-74" which is perfect for my girlfriend.  I also ordered a backup/travel paddle for myself with a 3 piece Werner Advantage 82-86". I got these in the new pearl(white) color.

On the plus side of ordering both of these I now have 4 different configurations I can make with all the pieces and one of them fits me for a surfing paddle.  I can also make a 74-78" paddle with the carve blade and a 78-82" paddle with the advantage blade.

My main paddle is a QB Kanaha full carbon which is really nice and is my main race paddle.  It feels lighter than the 3 piece paddles but isn't as durable for travel/letting friends try SUP as the fiberglass blades.

I had a C4 Stendy, but never could get used to the ball handle. It is otherwise a good paddle, and it is probably lighter than the Kialoa. The Kialoa is probably the better choice, although it is quite heavy (having an aluminum shaft).

I see this is a old thread i was wondering if anyone has any more feedback on the C4 "Stendy" Adjustable Paddle?

Our any other Good adjustable?

I did read this about the Stendy "Shaft length can be set to anything from 60" to 85"."
to clarify the first post

The Stendy round grip is a pain.I like the Adj carbon by North (less than $200)and the Adj aluminum for less than $90

They hold up and are reasonably light (carbon)

You can demo the Kialoa at Covewater in Santa Cruz.

We got one of Warren's Stand Up Paddle Sports adjustables for loaning to friends that want to SUP with us:

http://blog.surfingsports.com/2012/01/new-sup-paddles-2.html

I liked the 66-84" range, and the fiberglass blade gives good power with very little flutter. Not the lightest paddle out there, but it's not really heavy either.

Your wife will probably want something close to 70", and you'll want something in the 76" range. That's actually a pretty narrow range. Most adjustables will do it. You could even get away with a Ke Nalu and extended Ergo-T, though heating the joint every time you wanted to switch would be a pain.

I'm currently testing the latest iteration of our adjustable--in fact I'm headed out now for round two. I can't believe how long this simple part has taken to get right. But it will be available as a retrofit for any existing Ke Nalu as well as a finished paddle. Has the added advantage that you can change the upper or lower bound of the range. You can remove the clamp and cut the paddle if you hot glue instead of using epoxy. It's not as torque-resistant if you hot glue it since the paddle shaft isn't oval, but so far it looks like there's an adequate amount of area for hot glue to work.

Aloha G,
Thanks for the review...
Our adjustable hybrid paddle is definitely not heavy...with 18" of adjustability, it's over 1/2 # lighter than an adjustable fiberglass Werner Carve with 4.5" of adjustability at the same retail price, $219...our carbon shaft has better flex...and, we include a free blade guard if you want one...
