Most versatile SUP
« on: September 16, 2010, 01:01:08 PM »
I'm tryin to decide what kind of sup to build.  What style would be most versatile? Lakes, rivers, and ocean.  Also the foam is 2lb should I use a stinger?

I'm not sure I really understand what you're asking for; elaborate and you might get the responses you're seeking...

I'm 5'10@ 190lbs  what size and shape sup board should I build? I will be on lakes and rivers mostly but some surf.  Plus the foam I am using us 2lb density closed cell foam, should I use a stringer? Or no stringer more glass?

Have you ridden any production boards that you like? What is your experience level in waves? Do you favour flat water or waves?
I weigh 75kg, about 5'7". I started out on a Starboard Drive (10.5 x 30 ")  I quickly realised that I prefered to be in waves. The Drive is perfectly adequate for this , but I fancied something shorter, so built a  8.5 x 30. This works perfectly for me, but would not be ideal if I wanted to do solely flat water. You could cheat like me, try a few boards and base yours on one you like.

garyb,   were I live (Muscle Shoals, Alabama) there are no sup rentals that I kno of. I stay on the Tennessee river wake boarding and boating. I built an 8ft regular surf board for vacationing to the ocean. So, Mainly I would be on the river, behind a boat, or at the occasional beach vacationing. Thanks for the help.

If your screen name is any indication, it appears you have a supply of foam.  Start with a 10.5ftx30"x4.25" with slight v toward the rear, and a slight concave nose to center, and build another one if yiou dont like it.  If your serious about SUP you will not be happy with one board.

I suggest reading through "Tribal Knowledge" and "anatomy of a Board"  By King David.  You will find most of your answers there.
