This was one of those "Lucky we live Hawaii" days.  From the coffee drive out to Honolua, to the hike in with gear through the jungle, to the crossing itself (which Chan and I did as a team), and then a docked on-boat steak/sausage/chicken barbecue with plenty Guiness on Molokai, this was an unreal day.

The conditions were mixed and definitely far from what this run can be.  The first half hour was lake flat, followed by a light side wind for the rest of the crossing to Molokai.  Behind the island things got very fun for aout 8 miles (kind of like a normal good south shore run), then it went flat agin for the last two miles before the finish.  To quote Jeremy Rigs, " I was so burned out by the time I got to the wind that I couldn't really do much with it" (although, of course his time doesn't reflect that).

I had a great time yesterday. I felt very lucky to be able to participate after the birth of my 2nd daughter, Ruby, 6 days ago. I give all the credit to my wife, Jill, who gave me the inspiration and drive while my legs and feet were getting stiff. Thank goodness my mom was here to help with the babies.

I hope this race continues to take place. It was economical since there was no escort boat requirement for the solo participants. In my opinion, it is by far the best long distance downwind race out there.

Connor Baxter is fast becoming the best downwind surfer in the world. Congratulations to all the competitors and thanks to all the supporters on the sideline. Great job on the race Mormaii and Handsome Bugga Productions.

Hope to be a part of it next year!

Anyone know what board Connor was on for this race?

From the pics of above it looks like a Starboard. He is sitting at the edge of the escort boat and his board is in the water. I do believe its his sponsor never saw him on anything else.

^^^^ I believe it is a SIC made "Starboard" prototype.

Yes - Starboard is his sponsor.

Congratulations Connor - Well Done!

It's quite impressive that Connor not only does well in windy conditions where surfing skill and the ability to read and connect the swells is so important, but he also won this race with not much wind and where sheer paddling strength was a huge factor. I would've expected a bigger/stronger paddler like Dave Kalama or Ekolu to win. Connor's endurance must be incredible.

Hey Chan, great shoulder stacking in that photo! You guys are really getting some distance in - getting worried about keeping up in August...
Is that Jacks F16 you are on?
These long distance races are so different to the shorter beach races, of course there is a strong competitive side but a large part of it is about a small group of like minded people sharing an amazing experience together, somehow the photos really convey that feeling, very special.

Hi Jonathan and Cammar,

Just stick to my rigid 3 step training program and you'll out-paddle the rest.

1 cheese
2 Guiness
3 nap

See you on the water soon!

I didn't know who to give credit to for that perfect technique in the "shoulder stacking" photo. Nicely done, Chan. I made it the background on my desktop. It captures that split second of anticipation just before the catch.

How is that for creepy?  Some dude on the internet half way around the globe has your photo on his desktop and used a word like anticipation describing it.
