12' Laird For Maliko Run?
« on: June 26, 2010, 11:38:16 AM »
Aloha everyone, I have been SUP'ing for a little over a year now and I love it for both surfing and paddling.
I recently upgraded to a Coreban 9'6" Performer for surfing. My ? is, does anyone do the Maliko run on a old 12' x31Laird.(which I still have) I  love this board for loading up my kids and catching waves. I really want to do the Maliko run though appreciate any experience anyone has .

Do it.  Maliko is a hoot.

Lots of people do maliko on 12 footers.  But the urge to upgrade to the faster 14+ boards is strong.

I've been on my 12-2 lately, downwinding the south shore afer work.  12 footers are super fun.  Sugar beach to the cove has been great this week.  The south is far tamer than maliko, but glides abound.

South shore downwinders can be very rewarding.  The trick is to keep an eye on the direction of the trades.  They need some north in them.  40 degrees is best, and you can get that info here.
http://weather.noaa.gov/weather/current/PHOG.html

If the trades are driving 80 or 90 degrees (due east), the south shore will be nearly calm.  As the wind shifts from east to east north east and north east, downwind conditions get very good.  You will also see great downwind condition occur up to 70 degrees, but they are less likely to hold for an entire run.  The east wind whips around from Alenuihaha and comes up the south shore as well.  Sometimes as far as mid Kihei.  Downwinders can become upwinders in a flash on the south shore.  But I've only been caught a few times.  It's usually very fun.
