Switching vent plug
« on: June 15, 2010, 02:33:28 PM »
I have a Starboard 11'2 blend with a screw in vent plug that requires me to bring along a phillips screwdriver anytime I go in the water.

Does anyone know if I safely replace this with a hand screwed plug?  I tried the plug from a friend's Bark 14 this morning and it looked like it sealed the vent, although the plug didn't go down as deep into the board as my screw in one does.

I really don't think it's worth taking the chance. Once you get water in your board, it's the beginning of the end.
What's so bad about about bringing a phillips screwdriver?

Just tighten it up and forget about it.. Unless you want to travel on a plane with it or let it get really hot.

You may want to consider a gore-tex vent plug.

Do it once, do it right and forget it.

On a first hot day of spring, leave the board in the sun 30mn with the plug open.
grease the screw, close the plug.
do not touch the plug anymore.

Opening/closing the plug on each session will end in a disaster: you will either forget to close it or the screw will leak as the rubber will wear out.
