SUB's for Kids ??
« on: June 10, 2010, 03:37:45 PM »
Hey Gang

I have a question. I have been looking for companies that sell Kids SUB's . However I have found only one. My daughter is 9 and weighs 80 pounds but really wants to paddle board and surf with it. I guess I can have a custom board shaped for her but i was hoping for some ideas. she was using a soft top 8 foot long board from costco but outgrew it (to tippy).

Any ideas or links will be appreciated.

Aloha

Check out Paddle Surf Hawaii.  I just saw some 7'5"'s and 8'6"'s.  Boards were designed with kids in mind.

Try using a surfboard. Most kids do just fine on them as SUP. A lot cheaper than a custom SUP and probably better in the surf. My 8 year does just fine on my 8'6 longboard.

Thanks  I have a 9 foot Town and Country I will let her try first and see how she does.

Thanks.

I will also check out Paddle surf Hawaii, or craigslist for one.

My son has a Starboard Hero - 9.0" x 33"
Short enough and light enough for him to carry himself and wide enough that it is stable for him in all conditions.
Easy Rider is the name of my store in Edmonton, AB, Canada.
My name is Warren Currie . . . and we SUP Surf indoors . . . in a shopping mall!

I picked up an old Starboard kids softtop windsurfer for $50 from a lifeguard that found it washed up on the beach...giving it to a friend for his kids.

I don't have kids, so take this with a grain of salt (my dog loves to SUP though, and she gets more attention than lots of kids).

Go Cheap!  There are lots of inexpensive beater boards out there that will float a kid just fine.  If they take to it, and use it enough without getting bored or losing interest, THEN look for a new board.  The paddle may need to be new, though.

Thanks

My daughter was paddling for about 6 months now and was getting very good on her 100 dollar costco special. But she outgrew it. She has her own C4 paddle and She needs a board she can grow into. She definetly likes paddling and she is good at it so I was kinda looking for something she would ride for a few years ?? Hoping in a year or two she will get good enough to do down wind runs with us :)

I'm in a similar boat. My daughter is 7 and wife is small and both need a board since they are tired of my "huge" 10 footer. I've come to the conclusion that a small board like the pod from starboard at 7'4" x 29.5" or even the 6'6" impossible would be good and give me a fun shortboard to try in ideal conditions. Basically a good excuse for dad to get another board. :) everyone wins. LOL

My 6 year-old paddles next to me on a 8' foamie surfboard from Costco that costs $50.  Perfect size & price.

For a cheap decent paddle, try SeaSense.

http://www.atafa.com/sports/products/SeaSense_PADDLE_FT_ALUMINUM-333090.html

The local K-Mart stores have them in various sizes.  If it's not the correct size, it's easy to drill out the handle rivets and cut to custom size.
