What's a good do everything board?
« on: June 02, 2010, 12:19:08 PM »
I'm looking into buying a SUP. I would like a board to cruise on, surf, and even take my 6yr old for a ride on flat days. I'm 6ft 190 lbs. My surf breaks are LA County North, Oxnard, Ventura, and S.B. I like the new shorter wider boards like the wopper but since I want to take my kids for rides this board may be too short. Any board recommendations that I should demo that will meet my needs. What about the new PSH Ripper that is 11' by 32. Will this be a do everything board or is it more surf oriented.

Cheers!

I was just looling at the PSH website and couldn't find the board with the specs you mentioned...all the listed "wide" boards were only 30" or so. I'm looking for a board thats more than 30" but maybe not all the way out to 34 or so like the wopper. I'm looking at the 10' Mana, but haven't been able to demo it yet, i'd have to drive a couple hundred miles to do so. Whats the thickness of that PSH your looking at?

I think you'd be better off with a big board like the Naish 11'6" Nalu.

mrpete,
I was searching the forums and read somewhere that PSH is coming out with new boards with wider specs in the Ripper series. Not sure when these boards are suppose to ship though.

here's what just came in from PSH....

Hey Pete,

We are coming out with new Ripper models that are wider.  I have listed the wider Ripper models that are coming out.

9'4" x 30" x 4"
9'11" x 31" x 4 3/8"
10'6" x 31" x 4 5/8"
10'11" x 32 x 4 5/8"

NOTE: No, we do not have pictures of these new models yet.

The first 2 listed should be in the shop some time next week.  The other 2 listed will be in the shop towards the end of July.  If you have any other questions, please feel free to give us a call.  Thanks.

The Starboard Drive is a GREAT OVERALL BOARD. Maybe it's 10'5"x30" are a bit small for your requirements, but I love this board

It's a good board no doubt but if your 6' and 190 lbs you will struggle to paddle a board that size with a kid on board.. As far as Starboards go you'd be better on the 12'6" Cruiser.

So can it be used for downwind action to and be competive with the bigger SUB's? HONESTLY since the claim being made is a GREAT OVERALL BOARD. ::)

Hey JimK,
How would you compare these Pau Hana's to a South County 10x35x5 ?
I've got the SC, but wonder if a little narrower, longer Pau Hana board would serve me well cruising up/down the coast in search of knee high waves.  Haven't paddled anything else, but the SC must not be the greatest distance cruiser, with it's dimensions.

thanks
Mike

I think the title may be a little misleading but the initial post says he is only looking for a board to cruise on, surf, and take his 6yr old for a ride on flat days.

I moved away from Oxnard/Ventura just under a year ago - for what you are looking for, there is no one do it all board.

I had an 11'6" Naish that I would use to paddle with my kids on smaller/flat days, but in any waves higher than shoulder high, the only place I could really surf it well was Mondos.  Port Hueneme Beach, C Street, Oxnard Shores, breaks South of the Power Plant at Port Hueneme all were too fast to paddle in and easily make the drop.

I got a 9'6" and I could take any wave anywhere from Santa Barbara down to County Line.

You're going to need 2 boards...

The Naish 12' Glide is another option.. It's replaced my 11'6" Nalu as my do-it-all type board.

Here's a short vid of me on my 12' and Rea on her 11'6" that she filmed on her phone.
