I could really use your help on some FCS Quad Fins.
« on: May 26, 2010, 08:34:44 AM »
Yes I have done every possible search in here and can quote many of the responses, however I still need help.  I purchased the 8-5 Starboard Pocket Rocket which is set up as a quad.  Board dimensions are 8' 5" X 30" wide, wider nose area with board narrowing towards the back in a swallow tail.  I'm 5' 9" and about 167 lbs.  The board is incredible but comes with some of the most low budget fins I've seen.  They are like a flexible plastic material.  Anyways, I don't have too much experience in fins, so I was hoping I could tell you what I'd like in a fin and you could tell me what some possibilities would be.  I did see that Bob from Brazil really liked the H2's as well the FCS Sunny's in the front and the GL's in the rear.  I like the H2's but I think I need large in the Front and Small in the back and they sell the combo with Medium up front and Small in the rear.  I'm worried they may be too small.
Most of the So. Cal surf is 2-5 feet on average and a combo of mushy to sometimes punchy waves.
I'd like something with good drive but also do want to sacrifice too much speed coming down from a wave and turning up to the wave.  I'd like something that can carry momentum throughout the turn.  I don't mind something loose, just not too loose.
Can anyone lead me in the right direction with a decent combo set of FCS's.  Right now I think are the template M7's in the front and M5's in the rear.

Thanks!

Hi Boludo, I've just put a set of the Simon Anderson Large into my PR, larger fins in front. Before the Simon Andersons I had a quad set of PC-7 's in the front and G-XQ 's in the back - the improvement with the Simon Andersons astonished me. Comparing the two sets it didn't seem there was much difference in shape but the performance difference was huge, the board will not only trim more easily but is much looser. The SA's have the profile on both sides of the small fins whereas the the G-XQ is basically flat on the inside. Hopefully someone with way more experience with quad fins will comment as well.

By the way the Simon Andersons are called S25 Large as a quad set.

JonathanC,

Thanks a lot for the response.  This at least gives me some direction from someone that has a fin combo that works for them.  If I don't get any other responses to consider, I may just have to order some of these Simon Anderson's.
Thanks again!!

Looks like a good set up.  I think that's the set up you had on the PR when I was out.
The negative is that I think they sell the H2's in a Tri or Quad and same with the M5's which means I would have to buy a set of each one to separate them.  Unless I use the stock M5's that come with the board, but I'm not to keen on the material of those fins.

Well I went with the H2 and M3 set up.. I found it very wierd. The board made a humming sound when I laid into a turn, and felt like it was dragging. I tried them with the H2's in front also, same result.
I was out in onshore choppy , head hi waves , and it was challenging .
So Sup Position, what changes  should I be looking for with this set up. I could be searching here, and I'm kinda new to the board, but can you elaborate !?!
I like the original fin set up, the way the board slides sideways a little when I first take off and turn down the line. But the PR oringinal fin set up does seem to have its limits in head + choppy, onshore conditions, bouncing and harder to control.
 Thanks for all the insight!!!

Can you describe your surfing style.
Are you a back foot or front foot surfer?
My guess is back foot.

Have the Tiki 8'5" by 28" ... MR Twins in Front, generic 6.5 inch in the back... decent drive, nice release from turns...

Intermediate at best, I kite a lot with my surfboard in all kinds of waves, and love to throw as much spray as possible, so I guess you are correct sir......back foot. But I love to point the PR and ride the rail too, step back, turn.......

I don't think the H2's are making the humming.
If you lightly sand the rear edges of the M3's it should go away.
The M3 Front and H2 back is for a front foot down the line drive.

Since you are more of a power back foot, climb and dive style,
try something like this.

Dt Front, FK2 Back.
Might be a bit much with the FK2's,
I have heard good results with MR's in rear also.

Rock it!

hey..any reason why you have the big ones at the back? I thought most fish boards would keep the big fins forward..under your foot?

check out my front fins...I was just at hawaiian south shore and got a quad set I'm experimenting with...one set of double foils and one set of single foils...

I just hard it out like this..felt really nice. Much looser than the standard m7's that comes standard with the board....

I'm definitely gonna try them on my 7'9''
