Starboard Avanti vs. South County 10'
« on: May 24, 2010, 05:47:14 AM »
I have decided on one of these 2 boards: Starboard Avanti or South County 10'. Could anyone comment on either of these boards and your preference for either. I will be using it for both surfing and flatwater. Thank you.

What is your height, weight, and ability level?
What are the waves like where you will surf,
beach break , point?

6ft, 230. Will be surfing in all conditions as well as doing some flatwater. Skill level is intermediate but I don't get out as often as I should (once a week).

Noah,

I haven't tried the Avanti 11.2 x 36 or the Hero 9 x 33 yet, but I had a mr easy 12 x 32 and tried the whopper 10 x 34, blend 11 x 30, cruiser  12.6 x 30 and they are great boards.  I sold my starboard once I tried the South County 10' Turtle.  I truely love this board.  It surfs great especially setup as a quad.  I flat water paddle it with my wife (who has a South County 10' Turtle) daily/weekly and it tracks great and it is great exercise.  It is as stable as a rock and easy to paddle and easy to surf.  Got some nose rides out of it last week.

They have a South County Dragon 10' x 33 x 4 that is coming out this month.  A friend of mine is going to get one -  :)  I get to try that out soon!!

I'm 6'2" and around 250 - 270 and like a 10 foot board.  If you are worried about float  and stability go with the Turtle.  I think the size of the Starboard Avanti is more for someone who is larger than me and has no balance.  I would think the size would be a bit to big for you in the surf compared to a Whopper or a Turtle.

You will do fine on a Whopper.
If you can Demo one you will know.

The Avanti is 36" wide, the South County 10' is 35" wide....so I think the South County 11 is more like the Avanti because it is 36" wide. Also it was made 4 years before the Avanti came out.

At South County we take pride in getting as many people up and paddling right away so they can enjoy the sport of stand up paddling.
From the beginning our goal has been instant fun for all, paddling and surfing.

Got this email a while back:
"Whats up John. My name is Steve and I teach Sailing and SUP in Dana Point
Harbor. We operate off the dock by baby beach.

I have a little situation and really want to help this gentleman out. He
is about 6'2 and weighs in at 390+. He is trying to see if this is something
he can enjoy. I put him on all my 12's but nothing had the buoyancy. He did
get on one of my windsurfers and prone paddled around. Bob Lacy one of my old
students had one of your boards that could work 11' x 36?

I laughed when I saw it but this might do the trick. Let me know what you think?? I told
Dick, my student I would give him a call today if I could get my hands on
one of your boards. Would just need for an hour in the AM tomorrow. He is
leaving for East Coast Weds.
Thanks again and hope to hear from you soon."

We paddled the 11'er over and let him use it for a day then we got this email:

"He could be contacting you to purchase
something??? Or if you know where one of these beast are that is for sale.
Either way thank you again you made a very happy man (390lb man) stoked on
something we may take for granted. I attached some photos for you."

At 390# that guy is floating that board better than I float my wife's 10' X 28.5" X 4.5" at my 220#

Yeah, that board is a workhorse party barge and you can really load it up. It's on the bottom in this photo too.

None of the big SUP shops carry or know much about South County boards because we don't make that many....but they sure are a lot of fun to play with.
