board with glide?
« on: May 22, 2010, 11:34:41 AM »
hi i am now looking for a new board with GLIDE but under10-6
that is still stable

i am 5-11 and 190 lbs and surf a custom 9-1 subvector in epoxy glass over EPS - its a great board in decent surf but in small waves (below waist
high) the lack of glade from a short wide light board is a problem

so i am looking for a board with glide and willing to trade to less manoeverability rather than less stability

noseriding would be a plus

suggestions ?

You may already know what I'm going to say, but here goes anyway....

Demo the 9'5 Naish Mana.

My wife had a 9'0 custom EPS Sub Vector and I had a 9'2 custom sub vector on order. After 6 months of watching my wife surf her's, and me stealing it many times, we gave up. I cancelled my custom order, sacrificed my deposit and sold her's. It could snap a quick turn being super light, but the lack of glide drove us mad. It was either going 100 mph, or slogging, no in between speed. The rail catching also drove us mad.

The 9'5 Mana turns and flows with your body like a thing of beauty. It feels really loose for such a monster. Amazing board. But it will feel heavy after being on the custom. But weight makes glide!

I'm getting the wife a 9'0 Mana when they arrive sometime this summer.

BTW, I'm 186 lbs

How is the Mana series on small mushy waves.  I thought I read on another thread that it was more suited for faster, punchier waves.  thoughts?

thanks

I don't think anything works well in small mushy waves.. but the Mana's do like them.. IMO.

A friend and I paddled our Mana's today (me on the 10' and her on the 9'5") and they are a very good board for flat water paddling compared to most wave boards. (pics in the Sessions section)

Here's another friend on his.. Did someone say 'punchier waves'..  ;D

here are some from photos from yesterday surfing the inlet. I'm in the blue shirt. The Mana is my mushy wave board.   http://www.flickr.com/photos/50106872@N07/4629603811/#in/photostream/

I'm sure you can find something longer with less rocker and get into mushy waves earlier, but then you loose some of what makes the Mana magic to me. It rips! It's not the stiff log most of us learned on when we had larger boards.

Of course I'm biased (as I am the Florida Rep for Nah Skwell/AHD) but our NS106 has great glide, awesome noserides, turns on a dime and weighs in at 24lbs.  Later,   JD

Yeah nose rider!
The Starboard 10'5" Drive and the 9'8" Element
have plenty of drive and decent concave in the nose
for nose riding lift even in small waves.

I gott agree with the crew here the 10ft Mana is an excellent choice. But in your case in the UK it is worth looking into the Fanatic Fly 10ft an more conventional dimensions. I love the wood construction light and responsive We know mushy waves here on the EC

Here is some video showing our standard mush. Video shot this morning. You can see how the custom 9'2 does in this mush. It takes a lot of paddling, even after catching the wave, to keep it from passing under him.

Interesting, obviously the waves are slow and don't have much power but the sub vectors just seem to  stall out so fast. I was surfing over the last couple of days on my Starboard Pocket Rocket 8'5 and it seems like it has way more glide than these boards. So hard to compare without being there though. Nice gentle spot, looks like fun.
