Paddle Extensions
« on: June 02, 2010, 07:40:29 AM »
Want an extra 6 to 8 inches on the shaft.

Have an option-  visit to Home Depot / Lowes and see what they have in PVC pipe. Was thinking of making a cut say 4+ inches below the handle and splicing the extension together on the shaft and then pop in the handle on top.

Is a two piece carbon shaft and a plastic blade.

Any idea or thoughts?

Go to your local SUP shop and trade them a few donuts (or a beer) for a "cut off" piece of handle.
Then get an insert piece and splice it together.
We save all our cut offs.

I couldn't find a carbon cutoff in the same diameter as my shaft so I went with an aluminum tubing. It works well but it also added quite a bit of weight.

Tilt- well, few more inches won't hurt...  ;)

Carbon fiber tubing? Duh, just hit me. Okay, can this be done - splice the tube by glassing it? - or use an extra heavy duty tape like Gorilla Tape.

Suppose I can locate a tube about the same size. Maybe a bit smaller or larger so it will slip in and secure it with a pin of some sort then wrapped with a tape or glass it.

Thanks for your input.

I cut 4" off  my shaft, epoxyed an aluminum tubing that slipped into the shaft, epoxyed the 4" I cut off on the end for the handle and used electrical tape around the joints.

Me I machine out a solid  piece of delrin I got off ebay for cheap. You can even find them in 10 pc. lots and use them for other applications.

Have a temporary solution. Made a cut about 6 inches below the handle and got a piece of wood that fits inside the shaft then secured it with heavy duty Gorilla Tape. This only temp until I score some carbon tubing.

Want to splice and epoxy a carbon tube.

Made it an extra 8 inches, went out last night and wow have noticeable way more power. After a 2 hour session yesterday the tape holds up very well.

This fix sure beats paying for a whole new paddle.

FYI; the carbon shaft diameter from a C4 paddle slips perfectly over the top end of a Kialoa shaft.  I extended a Kialoa by 3 inches using an old C4 shaft... just got lucky I think.
