Starboard 11'2" UB skeg
« on: May 03, 2010, 07:49:08 AM »
I use my UB for flat water paddling and small surf (south shore LI)-I have the stock fin which is small - 7" maybe?  The board is nice and loose in small waves, but doesn't track all that straight for flatwater and is way too loose in bigger waves-can't handle it.
Any advice on whether to use side/biter fins in addition to the stock skeg or should I just go to a new 9" or 10" single skeg? regular old fashioned shape or hatchet or something?  I have moved my little stock skeg fore and aft in the box and it helps, but I am thinking that such a big board just needs alot more skeg? Expert input?  BTW, I am 185lbs and experienced longboarder (before my SUP of course-haven't touched my longboards since I got my SUP)
Thanks in advance

For flatwater - I would suggest a "Hatchet" style fin.

The Curtis race fin is AWESOME on flat water.

Easy Rider,
Have you tried the G10 Curtis?  If so, can you give us your thoughts on G10 vs Polyester?

Thanks.

I would also like to know.  Is it worth the extra $100 for flat water for the G10?

Do the hatchet fins work well in the waves?

Yes I have tried the G10 - - is it stiffer - Yes.
Does it make a difference in speed on flat AND calm water (which is where I have tried them) - not that I noticed.

Is it worth the extra $$ - your call.

For me - - on flat / calm water (lakes) I don't think the G10 makes a noticeable difference.
On choppy conditions (ocean) I would bet it is a more noticeable difference.

Does it work well in surf?
Have not tried it on anything other than 2 foot lake wind swell - doing downwinders - works well for that.
Turning on a wave face - - I would bet not so good.  BUT EJ and Brandi seem to make them work.

We have some custom made Lime green ones coming in a day or two.
Will post photos when they show.
