do coreban core series boards have carbon fiber?
« on: May 10, 2012, 10:04:36 AM »
From their website it seems that the core series has "reinforced glass" and biaxial glass. But after all the poundings I've given my board I finally made a nice crack in the rail by the nose. The reason I ask about the carbon fiber is because the crack has some black "hairs" coming out of it.  I think I can repair it myself but I'm not sure how deep the crack goes.

this board is a few years old, and I can't say enough about the durability of it as I surf 30 knot onshore windswell on a shallow beach break or sand bar. It has handled victory at sea conditions and shore pound for so long, it was only a matter of time.

I'll take pictures when I get home from work tonight

maybe it is the wood veneer sandwich between the layer or possible filler materail for a low spot. there is no reason for them to use expensive CF and not advertise it.  But post up the pic so we can see it. Or worse case they where out of FG and were using really human hair or animal fur as a reinforce material. :o

No carbon in the core or pure boards.  Use an epoxy kit and repair

Thanks for the replies. I didn't think there would be carbon in there. These are the best pictures I can get from my iphone, the crack is only 2 inches long. I pulled a few of the black fibers out because at first I really just thought it was hair stuck to the board.

I am a pro when it comes to epoxy and fiberglass so I guess I won't worry about the repair too much.

It's funny because this board has handled so many poundings, at least 100 times I have had to stop and check the board because I thought for sure it was a goner, but it was fine.  The time I actually find a crack I don't know how it happened

"It's just a flesh wound", no need to worry. scuff it up a little w some sandpaper, spread some epoxy suncure, let it set, light sand, maybe reapply, another light sand. it won't take on water, but it might just "chip" up a little. looks like it's the gel coat finish (think mostly paint)
through a vinyl sticker over it, or better yet, some ocean lineage rail saver, and it'll be fine!

i said open/sand it out and see what inside, it will be interest to know where the black fiber comes from.  Are you sure it is not fibers from your board bag or rag when you were wiping it down.  Please let us know whats inside with more pic. thanks

Congrats!  Your baby board is growing up.  This can be a confusing time for both the board and its owner, but rejoice...puberty is perfectly natural.

The board went straight from the roof of the jeep to the side of the house to get hosed down when I noticed it. No board bag, no rag. I did the condensation test (plastic wrap over crack out in the sun) to test for water intrusion, but it seemed fine.  I will probably just sand and add epoxy/filler. I may re-paint the whole board since it has some paint chips.

I guess it works out since I don't like to be in the water too much during Tarpon season...too many big sharks, not enough waves.

and raf that's funny, I guess its time to have "the talk" with the board

Black could be from your paddle impact, or just stuff the paint grabbed as you moved your board around or in the bag.   I doubt that is a leaker.  My boards look way worst from my abuse.
