I was fortunate enough to be in the line up at Hanalei a couple of weeks ago.
When I mentioned I was from Canada and owned a snowboard shop - he was super into talking snowboarding.

Pretty funny listening to him try to say what his profession is. I half expected him to say "Hey, did Gabby put you up to this?"

I encountered Laird recently on a small day at Hanalei, he is very friendly and has a lot of Aloha. He goofs around a lot doing 360's and grabassing with everyone. He asked me how I was doing and if I was having fun.
Funny thing was everybody was trying to play it cool and not be star struck.
Laird seemed to set the mood which was to be friendly and have fun.

 Thou he wouldn't know me from a 'hole in the ground' today, I surfed and chatted with Laird at Hanalei back in '86. I was sitting on the bench at the foot of the old pier there just checking out the surf and trying to decide if it was worth the paddle... He just walked up, sat down next to me, introduced himself and started conversing with me about the waves, where I was from, where I was staying, etc... He then said "come on, lets paddle out". He was a goofy kid back then but you could tell there was something special about him...
 He later introduced me to his Pop (Billy) who's house was next to the A-frame I was renting. Billy was nice and full of Aloha too. I was in heaven for a week! Living next door to one of my idols. Great memories...       Later,              JD
