I only use wood paddles. I make my own.

How are you attaching the blades? Looks like the blades are mounted via a slot in the shaft.  Any of them breaking? I have been laminating mine on the shaft sides before I start the shaping process. I keep more core in the center of the blade and less thickness as you move away from center.

Do they work well for you?

Those paddles look awesome.

Can anyone give me info on...

http://surfpaddles.diysurfgear.com/?hop=sarkiz

It seems like a fun project, but by the design of the site, makes me feel it's a bit sketchy.

Any help would be much appreciated.

thx.

TerryS,

Brian did a sweet job on those paddles.  Missed you guys last week as I heard you were in the area (I was snowboarding).  Cannot wait to try one.

NEWBIE2SUP - I was leary of the site as well but figured what the heck. I really wanted to make my own paddle and needed some direction. Got the plans, made a few paddles. They turned out nice and now I use my own paddles exclusively. I even wrote a gagifying testimonial and sent them a pic. Thats one of my paddles on there main page. Got some free itunes music from them. They're legit.

any reason you run your shaft laminations side to side along the glue lines as apposed to across the glue lines i.e. front to back?
more flex?? aesthetics?? looking good.nice work.

Thanks for the info.  I'd like to give that a go at some point.

Curious how DIY'rs are finishing thier paddles. The first one I did I just Z-spar'd it. Then I chose to do a 4oz fiber wrap on the blade with an epoxy coating over all. What are you guys doing?
Oh yea, same question regarding shaft lam. Why did you choose lam direction same as blade glue up? More flex? I chose opposite for more stiffness.

My finish is marine spar varnish.  Nothing else.

My laminations run front to back and not side to side.  I also shape an oval shaft for more strength.

spar varnish is my vote too--i have tried fiberglass on some or all of the blade and shaft and have regreted the weight, texture and aesthetics.  it should be noted that my fiberglass skills are lacking.
