mid winter solitude on Lake Tahoe
« on: March 11, 2010, 11:41:08 AM »
When weather permits its great to get out on Lake Tahoe in the middle of winter. You pretty much have it to yourself & friends. Smooth glassy clear water & alpenglow before sunset. Got to keep paddling whenever you can. Bring your wetsuit & 5 mil booties the next time you visit Tahoe in the winter.

Love the bottom picture.  We haven't had water that smooth here in awhile.

Lake Tahoe is so deep at over 1600' it does not freeze. We are also in a maritime climate with temperatures rarely dropping into the single digits or teens for extended periods of time.

Hey Stillwater.

That looks a bit like Sugar Pine State Park in the background.

Tahoma resident here.

Just ordered a Starboard K15 for the lake (and a Blend for surfing as well).  Hope to see you out there.  Planning on a couple of the Tahoe area SUP events for fun too.

You can PM me for contact info...  You are definitely more studly than I.  Not mentally ready to paddle in 30-something degree temps.

You are correct. Sugar Pine State Park & the magical West Shore. Tahoma is my hometown. Paddled yesterday & it was amazing. Smooth as it gets. Big Sal & I are on it throughout the winter whenever the conditions look like the photos. Let me know when your in Tahoma. Springtime is a perfect time of year for paddling Tahoe.

High Sierra Bear.... I know who you are.. and we are closer than you think pal. You should check out being a volly with Meeks Bay.... Ha! Swing by 313 Alder St some time with that K15 of yours... also for future ref. Stilly sells those Starboards... and I have at least one for sale still.

You are definately studley enough to hang with us.

Cheers!

Please forgive the hijack.  But what are the best State Parks on Tahoe in regards to paddling?  Taking into account both access and quality paddling and the park itself(quieter the better).  I'd like to walk up to launch if possible.

Thanks

On the West Shore of Tahoe I would have to say Sugar Pine, DL Bliss, Meeks Bay. South Shore Pope Beach. East Shore Sand Harbor. The Lake is down pretty low now so good quality launching spots are becoming more limited.

What's my options for lake camping for easy water access?  I think a hit and run road trip from LA is in the near future.

Thanks for the photos.

Lake camping would be Meeks Bay, DL Bliss and Emerald bay. Emerald Bay has a boat camp inside the bay, but may be hard to get a site. Check out the Sierra District of Cal State Parks. All of these areas are summer only if you are going to stay at a camp site. On the East Shore, there are other options. Check out the Nevada State Parks web site. There is loads of good places to camp along the shores, but you have to be non-impact and non-visability.
