Dave Kalama - Photos - Technique
« on: March 05, 2010, 10:58:52 AM »

We have had the chance to do a few runs with Dave this week and I let him know about the interest that has been expressed here about the earlier photos and videos that we had done with him.  There were also a few questions that had come up in other threads and a request by Juandoe for some full frontal shots :)  JK, that was a great idea.  I took the opportunity to snap off some shots of Dave in the hopes that we could do some composites of the different stages of the stoke.  Also a pic of Kelly Moore's watertime shuttle which is now up an running  - Being modeled by Andrea Moeller, T Felgate, Dave and Kelly (hell, you may get some tips on the way up).

PS:  The run that followed this shoot was unreal.  The south shore is great, but there is nothing like Maliko when it's going!

Awesome pics!  I'm always up for Full Frontal :P  Any comments on the strokes?  The top looks like a Hawaiian as the paddle is fully immersed all the way back at the feet.  The lower pic looks more Tahitian.  Parallax is still an issue so I have decided you need to set up a Matrix "Bullet" array that we can spin in Flash. ::)

Hmmm. I don't know what all that arm drop is. He'd be yellin' at me if I did that.

did someone mention that his paddle blade was 10 inches wide? man i bet that thing has some serious leverage.
the business side of the blade seems flat in the close up too, no dihedral action. and a scraped off oxbow sticker. older paddle maybe? very cool.

Yeah that is one of the first things I noticed he was using a big big blade. Second is look how relax he is.

Does this camera make me look fat?

You can certainly see why Jeremy is so fast--beyond his alien balance and trim abilities he's a pared down paddling machine. A pair of shoulders three feet wide and a stick to hold them up.

Great pics as usual Randy.

Thanks for taking the time to shoot - paddle behind the gang- and edit.  Very informative.

A picture is worth a thousand words.

Randy - It looks like the only guy that bury's his paddle blade all the way in the water is Dave.  Am I seeing it correctly?

Apologies, I forgot to use the ab-slam feature, but I got it now.  By the way, you look raging hot in a midriff and I would say go with it more often.
