Vent Hole Question - Naish Glide
« on: March 02, 2010, 01:20:06 PM »
My Glide has the vent hole/screw.  I know that I should open the vent if flying or if the board is going to be left out in extreme heat.  Is that it?  When should I really be opening the vent?

this may sound stupid but definitely have it in when you're in the water!  Heard lot's of stories of people forgetting about it.  In my vented boards, I take it out whenever I'm not in the water.

So, if I'm storing my board in my cool garage, should I take the screw out if it's sitting unused...for a day?...a week?...don't worry about it?

Thanks everyone.

Leave the screw in.

The screw is sealing with an 0-ring in a sandy environment. A recipe for leaks. Set it and forget it. The boards are painted  in colors that stay cool. Don't bag it, don't put it inside a car.

Once installed - I have never touched a vent screw again - - and I paddle is some fairly wide temperature ranges.

oh so hey..I have all my boards in bags..reflective dakine bags. Any reason you don't bag yours? I only have my board in my car for transport. Not for leaving there. It is just easier to put it in the car compared to have it on the car...

I've found the boards are warmer inside a bag. Unzip and slide your arm inside to check. A white board with no bag is always coolest. I don't think I've ever owned a reflective bag before, so not sure about those.

http://boardlady.com/maintenance.htm

I always open my vent plug and have yet to have a problem.  70 days of 100+ weather last year and direct Texas sun.  Destroyed my brand new Ocean Earth bag in under 90 days.  Maybe construction is better now but I see nothing to counteract the expansion of the foam other than venting.  I wish my Pin had a vent plug.

That being that it was left over from windsurf board construction for when pro's would travel on airplanes with them.
MANY of the new boards do not even have vent plugs.

According to the industry experts on swayloks, EPS advanced more in the last few years than in the past 20. All thanks to Clark foam going under. The EPS coming from cobra is amazing. That is why so many boards don't have vents

I've had the vent open a couple times since I bought the board.  The board has been dry for a couple weeks, stored in a cool garage with the vent screw closed.  Today I went out for a couple mile paddle.  After I rinsed the board off in the yard, I opened the screw.  After a couple turns, you could see the bubbling in tiny bit of moisture around the screw head.  I was surprised to see how much off-gassing there was.  You could feel the pressure with your finger over the partially opened screw.  Sold me on opening the vent more often.
