Who’s ready for a Maliko race?
« on: March 02, 2010, 10:10:12 AM »
The winds have been up lately and we have been having some fun southshore runs.  We’re planning on doing the Maui Canoe Club short course, Maliko to the harbor (http://www.mauicanoeandkayak.org/2010schedule.html) on Saturday March 27th as our inaugural 2010 race.   Who else is ready?  It would be fun to have a good sized group to race with.  Remember to reserve a seat in the shuttle early, as it will likely be full.

I will definitely go. Even if the swell is big. Even if Randy wears those musty weird shorts with the keys and other stuff in the front. Even if the whales are doing divebomb flips. Even if the ocean looks like a victory at sea movie.

Unless it rains. I don't want to get my hair wet.

My forecast is for 30-40+.  It will be cool seeing how all the new board shapes work out.

I've been watching that.  10 foot swell would make for a challenging day.  Don't think I'll be doing the long course.

"challenging day" -- that's one to add to my glossary on Ke Nalu http://www.kenalu.com/2010/03/22/glossary-a-guide-for-the-puzzled/. Right next to "inconsistent".

Man, there's just about NO swell. Good thing, my F18 is still laid up so I'm gonna use the Maliko 14. Normally I'd like a rudder, but it looks like a GO.

Looks dead flat from my house, no wind, little swell. Supposed to be blowing 15 kts by now, but there's nada.

Yeah it was pretty light.. actually very light but at least there was some wind.. little onshore though.. Pretty slow hard race...  The young guns, Slater and Conner did very well... nice to be young and have stamina... Kono's first Maliko run every.. experience helps for sure in picking the right line..  Livio won overall (I think) Jeremy, Larry, Bruce, Lee, Sharon, Ron and myself were also present... swell was very small and glides were hard to come by... Still its such an amazing run.. Love competing with the canoes... Dont feel so alone out there... Didnt take hardly any pictures at the beginning and none at the end... too tired and there were beers calling my name... Thanks Maui Brewing Company... and of course the Canoe Club for another fun event...

I bailed. My F18 is in the shop from getting dropped, and the Maliko 14 doesn't care much for flatwater. I probably should have sucked it up and done it, but I wound up surfing on the west side (small but fun) and then doing a southside downwinder when the wind came up. Fun day.
