12'6" race board for bigger guys?
« on: February 23, 2010, 05:43:42 PM »
Similar to the other post about race boards for bigger guys...but what about 12'6" race boards for bigger guys? I'm 190-200lbs....will be used for racing/touring mostly in flat water (lakes and intracoastal), sometimes with chop, and the occasional ocean swell.

There will be alot of new 12'6 race SUB to be released in the next couple of months. There will be a wide variety so you would just need to narrow it down what you want to spend and what overall shape that would suite your specific conditions. Just my dimensions of my 12'6 I ride 4" thick by 27" wide. At the time I was 211 lbs and the float and speed was great.

Joe BARK will make a 12'6" inch custom for your weight.  He will also let you demo boards to help with your decision on width and thickness.

A 12'6" race board for bigger guys is a 14" race board.

Sounds to me like the Starboard Pin might be the right board for you.

Has anybody out there tried the Starboard Free Race or the new Bark Competitor yet?

Redfour-

I just got the Bark 12'6" BOP/Competitor 12'6"as a B-Day present from my awesome wife , and I love it. I've paddled it twice and, imho, it seems very fast, and stable, to me. I also played around practicing turns around  lobster bouys and the board manuevers really well.I am 6' about 165-170lbs. This is a 12'6" he shaped and not the surftech one, but I am sure that will be awesome too, but then again I am a huge fan of anything Joe makes.

Redfour-

I'll tell you as soon as we have some of those conditions. I've had it out three times now and it has been pretty calm. It paddles well into the wind. I can tell you the Bark 14' expedition handles those conditions very well. Itold you I like Joe's distance/race boards :). I like much shorter boards 8'11" and 9'6" in the waves, so personally I would never take either of these boards into the surf.
