cast a net?
« on: February 18, 2010, 07:29:33 PM »
march through april is smelt season here in chicago.

dip nets and other contraptions were the norm back when these fish were more plentiful. i'm wondering if a throw net off a sup will offer the necessary mobility to get over the schools wherever they may be. might take one down to warmer waters to see just how hard it is to cast off of a teetering platform.

smelt are like small sardines eaten bones 'n all...

cast net instructions there are several techniques but i'm thinking that this is about as simple as a toss can get...

those weights would wreak havoc on most composite decks so inflatables may be the way to go. just wondering if anybody else is thinking along the same lines here?

You'd probably want to use a smaller net than a typical Hawaiian casting net. They work fine for shore fish, but for schooling fish like smelt you could probably use a small bait net and do well. I use the kind that includes a plastic coated sinker you hold in your teeth. You can spin and toss them 20-30 feet with accuracy with just a little practice. Just remember to let the sinker go as you toss.

good point there ponobill. i can imagine seeing dentures fly only to realize i don't have dentures (yet). the only net i could dig up is like 24' in diameter maybe tying off mid-point will be a solution (12' dia is legal limit here btw). also might have to work out a quick release tie off at the wrist rope in case one accidently snags something more than they can handle.

I'm actually not doing much fishing in LA at the moment.  I've never tried in on a SUP, but might in the future.  Tahoe SUP has a video with a guy fly fishing, that would be my ideal.

I do spearfish occasionally and try to get at least one halibut each year.  SCUBA is another big sport of mine, and enjoy bug hunting during the season, but didn't get out much this year.

I hope folks keep the fishing section of the forum going.  I enjoy the vids and photos.  Casting a net looks fun.

I do some work with Native Watercraft and so found this video while mucking around in the kayak fishing world.  But it has a bit on hand casting nets and so I thought it was relevant to this thread
