I can see the SUP attack in OZ. . Surfing is a National Sport in OZ, as is our Major League baseball in our country.  When SUP'ers hit the water surfing their waves its sort of ''tarnishing'' the country's national past time,  just like our steroid use'' tarnishing'' MLB.  It will get press, opinions, contoversy and will raise arguments over opposition.

I am not trying to start any fights or long heated debates, I have an observation. All of the resistance to SUPs makes perfect sense.
Ask old sailors what windsurfing did for the sailboat market.
What did snowboards do for the ski market?
Paragliders do for the hangglider market?
Kiteboarding for the windsurf market? (one pro windsurfer stated the thing he likes about kiteboarding is that he no longer needs to lock up his windsurfing gear.)

None of these shifts are liniar nor are the changes necessarily caused by the "new sport" and they do indicate dynamic changes.
Let's face it people resist change (20+years as a therapist has proven this to me).

Some people are just naturally early adopters of change. That would be most SUP folks.

I like the fin array on the board--looks like about three hundred bucks worth.  Mighty crowded beaches they have in OZ it seems. Looks like the East Cost was when I was a kid--you could hardly walk through all the blankets. I hear it's less so these days--people stay home in their air conditioned houses and watch TV.

Seriously though, these big boards can be a challenge. When I wave sail my SUP I feel like I'm dragging a boat our of the water. It's a schlep.

Hi Ponobill I remember the beach's in the 60's in the Newcastle area around christmas you had to take note of your umbrellas colour or it was almost impossible to find your family.Even then it was impossible to walk down the beach without at least stepping on someones towel. At least only being a kid I could walk under the umbrellas without ducking.I think the introduction of low cost fibreglass home swimming pools was the first reason for the fall in beach attendance, then the concern of melonoma has carried it on.There now seems to be a move by families back to public places but with more awareness of the sun.
We have had a shark attack here lately on a surfer so that will keep a few of them away.
Cheers from Australia
