IMO the more bouyant and higher up the board sits in the water the more it can get blown around (extra length can be tough too).  Thats why the super tapered deck rail and step rail are working nicely for sup because you can still get the float but not get tossed by wind and cross chop.  I had a friend who has never SUP'd have way better sucess on a 10ft board over the 12ft board because she wasnt getting "weather veined" and blown all over, plus she could turn it way easier and it was virtually as stable as the 12 footer.  Just my observation's.  Of course you can always go too far and we will before we come back to the general size and shape that works the best it happens on all sports.  I am predicting a paradigm shift in board design coming up and we will be seeing beginner boards that work great in the 10 foot range.  At least thats what my crystal ball is telling me. ;D
But oviously I have an opinion on everything.
Thats why the Zone Rocks!
