Amazing stuff. I like that I didn't have to buy a DVD to see this.   Last year this type of content would have only been available through the traditional DVD sales format.
We are seeing a transformation of the surfvideo industry, do you want to wait months to get the DVD or see it the day after.

This is produced video and fwhile simple it is professionally put together.  Clearly surfline purchased the rights to the video from the team that put it together and see a ROI from an increased online ad revenue.   As a web developer, I see it really interesting how surfline / wavewatch is transitioning from static / written content to videos.

Clearly Evan and Pono Bill (video bloggers)  are using videos in their blogs and filling the void faster than others.

Interesting comment Michael.  You nailed it.  The net is undergoing a transformation, and digital content providers are scrambling to stay current.  With the merger of Adobe and Macromedia, you have programs like After Effects, Premiere, Photoshop and Illustrator, producing directly to a Flash timeline which is now video rich.  Youtube will begin transitioning from low quality Flash 7 to high quality Flash 9.   AIR is now in final beta, which will bring increased desktop interactivity to video and websites.  HD video cameras are now recording directly to flash memory at full HD resolution, and clips can be edited and online almost immediately.  Technirvana.

Rand,

I am really interested in getting a best of practices of how best to store/upload and create videos online.  I have several clips but don't know what is the best software and don't want to go down the path with one software and then figure out that I should have been using X.

Any sharing that you can give to the group as your learning advances, please keep it coming.   Would love to get what StandUpZOne users recommend

Right now, just for photos, I have been using photobucket - slide.com - flickr.com costco etc.

Hi Michael,

AIR (and similar programs, all in final beta) will bring a much higher quality video to the web.  These programs are net/desktop based, and will allow a DVD style interface, so a user will be able to scene select, lauch apps, web pages, get alternate music/editor tracks etc from the player.  This will be upgrading over time and many project that full screen, high def will be available in the not too distant future (yes, online).  That really changes things.  What does a "website" look like in that environment?

One thing is for sure, content creators have heard the bell, and are increasingly recording and storing the highest def video the can, and archiving full sized RAW photo files for future web use.

As far as video software, I use Adobe Premiere CS3.  It is expensive, but, but the CS3 Master Collection is an unreal asset.

Premiere has the most editable file types (without conversion) and the easiest export functions and this allows you to keep your video in its original form until export.  That means only 1 generation of loss (each time video is resampled, it loses quality).

As for online distribution, there are other considerations.  The reason Youtube gets used the most (by a landslide) is that it has an enourmous built in user base.  Therefore, even though the quality is low, the video will be watched.  Put up a great looking video on a standalone site, and the video is limited to the sites traffic.

Hi Michael,

Just a note about what some folks are achieving right now in terms of HD-like quality online.

The content is way off topic, and should be skipped by most, but it does show off some of what is currently possible (and hey, a little Velvet Underground in the first one).

Personally, I am blown away that this on us already, and I am loving learning about how this is getting done (and I have a LOT to learn).

Amazing video quality.  Wow, talk about putting a new tool into the hands of the consumer for online.  This is a Wow when you put this together with some SUP.

MY old TV broke before the holidays and made the plunge into a HD 60 incher and it is really cool, except it is breaking my mantra "Kill your TV" and watching more than I usually allow.  addicting when you see sports in HD.

I was checking out the HD Video cameras the other day.  Did not make a purchase, interested to see what will come out with adaptability for a water housing for video.  Unreal stuff and the clarity of these videos.  Screw YouTube.com current format.  This is the future.

Also heard that there are porn stars that have been going back to get extra plastic surgery to look better with the HD.

Pretty exciting to think about a HD Sup video. Or a HD wide aspect camera mounted on the front like Cammar does...

I definitely want to take a crack at that later this winter into summer.  Just for fun and sharing here, but also as a vehicle to learn and get this stuff dialed in a bit for other web projects.

It is really a category shift when a one man operation can aquire, produce and distrubute broadcast level content worldwide with a few thousand dollars worth of gear.  Previously that was the domain of broadcast companies and studios.

One other incredible thing about the best of these new cameras is that they shoot true hi def to "super" flash cards (no more tape) and the record 60 frames a second (over 2 megapixels each frame).  Better yet, they do not interlace, so that means essentially 60 high quality photgraghs a second (no more junky looking stills from video).  Can you imaginge the previously missed action moments that can be caught at 60 frames a second?

Anyone with a current web server can serve flash (or QT) video of the quality in the linked clips.

All that, and to think that we are at the very begining of this...cool times.

What amazes me is that the speed of change just seems to keep growing. When you consider the pace of change and convergance of technologies that we've seen (in all areas, not just video) the potential for the future it's nothing short of mind boggling. Exciting times indeed!
