Everybody "LOVES" their sails & rigs....share the love!!!
« on: December 26, 2009, 08:25:24 AM »
When people talk about their boards I have noticed maybe 1 to 3 cover "MOST" needs...But "Sails and rigs" are a diffrent matter! Size of sails, type of sail material, mast dia., boom clamp construction, extension and pulleys (w/wo the hooks), base and pin styles....and the carbon vs alum. thing?  THIS IS ALOT OF STUFF TO JUST GUESS AT............As a NEW sailor I want to keep it simple!
("simplicity IS wisdom" John Paul II 1979)
I would like to have only 2 sails using the same rig.....
                             The Conditions & Equipment
1. SUP board with 200 liters of float (about)
2. Light Winds BELOW 20mph
3. Sailor, 245lbs of limited but fast learning ability
4. On shore winds in LIGHT chop most days (south east coast Fla.)
5. NOT a "surf jockey"
Thanks for the Knowledge! Sumo

Hi Sumo,

Would you consider used?  There is so much used gear over here of insane quality.  It had gotten to the point a few years back where the consignment shops would not even take used sailing gear.  It is not at all unusual to have someone give away a complete rig to a new sailor.  Plenty of garage sails on maui where you can pick up near new stuff for silly prices.

Possibly someone here has a rig for you, or possibly post on Craiglist Maui.

This looks like a nice intro setup to me:

Everything works together from a very reputable company. Good for someone starting out. Expand as your needs demand.

Here's my recipe. I honestly wouldn't use anything else. Part of that is my crappy shoulders, these sails are VERY forgiving and easy on the body. I weigh 255 and use them on both windsurfers and SUP boards:

Maui Hot Sails Superfreak sails: 5.0 and 6.2 -- you can get away with that big jump because SUP boards are not that fussy and Superfreak sails will cover a big range, you can waterstart them underpowered and sail them comfortably way overpowered.

"European" mast connector--the pin type. It's tough to carry a SUP rigged since there aren't usually any straps, so it's important to have a board to mast connector than can be released and connected with things being shoved around.

Skinny CF mast. CF booms, whatever harness floats your boat. I like Impact vest harnesses for big days, waist harness for not. And a helmet. Mine has two heavy gouges on it that would have hurt bad.

Randy is very correct, you can get sails almost for free at garage sales, and you might even find superfreaks.

Where do you live, Sumo?

Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

SUP surfsailing, for me its always a size 5.3 wave sail, carbon skinny wave mast, carbon wave booms, and an uphaul.

Pono and all....Happy New Year! Im 75 miles north of Miami...lots of stuff to buy there, nothing local yet!!! Lots and lots of kite guys not many board sailors! Paddle boards all over the place! Whats up with the Dacron vs Mono sail thing...this seems to be a contentious subject in the brotherhood. I noticed you are a superfreak guy! Sumo

Dacron gives, and the Kevlar threads in the superfreak sails keep it from pulling out of shape. So instead of a BANG you get a whooosh of power. If I was twenty I might like the Bang, but at 62, whooosh is good.

Also Mono is heavy, Dacron is not. A 9 meter superfreak is about as heavy as a 4 meter mono. I nine meter superfreak will warp out the Queen Mary.

I gave away two complete quivers of fine sails less than a year old (long, stupid story) the day I bought my first Superfreak. They are all I will sail. I pay full retail for them and consider them cheap at the price. I know Jeff Henderson doesn't like it when I say this, but they are Viagra for old windsurfers. They are also bulletproof. Mine are three years old and they look and perform like new.

Go RDM whenever possible. Way more durable. Mast brand should match sail brand too, for best performance.

I agree with PonoBill on (almost) everything.  Definitely get an RDM.  I don't use Euro pins, but I can see why they'd be worthwhile.  I like the "soft" feel of Super Freaks, too, but I still use monofilm sails on my short board.  Unfortunately, living in San Diego, I don't get to use my short board very often!

My only differences with Bill are sail size and CF booms.  I almost never sail anything bigger than a 5.8.  Anything bigger than that and I feel like I lose maneuverability and I bury my clew in the wave face too often.  I am a bit smaller, though.  I also think that carbon booms may not provide much incremental benefit for the price for low-performance sailing like this.

If you're interested, I have an '09 SF that I only sailed once and would sell a a pretty decent discount off retail.   It's a 6.3, so it would probably be a better size for you than for me.  Also, check out the Classifieds on iwindsurf.com.  Also, HSM has used sails on their website, including my old 5.5!

Hey eg....I just bought a 6.3 SF (sorry I missed yours) and Im looking for a 5.5 SF! I seen your sail on the HSM site and it looks right! These will be my "A Team" to start! The SF sounds like it works for my conditions and ability! I was set back by the cost of sails and rigs in general when I started looking.....the help and comments on this forum help me alot...THANKS TO EVERYONE!!! I also sent a few emails to Jeff at Maui sails about equipment and sails and he answered all my questions without making me fell like a "snot nose rookie" Sumo

Sumo, I just posted on your other thread, so won't go into the sails, but one important component is the mast extension........I have now broken (2)now  in the surf using the SUP, while I have never broken one with my regular (small) windsurf boards.
If you are playing in the waves, there is a tremendous amount of force on the rig, due to the board being so large (and heavy)......count on breaking something if you get caught in the wrong location/wrong time.

Yeah, watch the toes too. I like to get into a wave and then just hold the mast with one hand and surf it. When the waves are big and closing it's easy to get into a situation and have the mast slam down on the nose where you are standing. I busted a toe last year, and put a big ugly fracture on the nose of the gecko board.

I use naish force 5.7 on my sups a  naish 10.6 nalu and a naish 9.6 quad with custom mastbox fitted. I use those combos for lightwind wavesailing. The force has great bottomend pull so you could go down in size. I don't need anything bigger on a sup. My biggest sail is a naish all terrain 6.5 wich I use fore blasting and freestyle on my naish global 100. I don't see the point of having a big sail on the sups i've tried so far, on a plane a dedicated windsurfboard is way supirior. I'we tried to scale down my sail quiver to 4 sails and two baords but now i'm back with a lot of sails two sailbords 3sups etc. mostley because my kids windsurf and surfs. I would recomend a 5.5 wavesail on a rdm mast to start with.

As you can see everyone is in agreement.  I use a Naish 6.3 and 5.3.  On both my big and small SUP I've gotten to where I just use the 5.3 because I notice I'm carving tighter on the SUP and the clew won't hit the water.
My new Quatro cumstom Quad 8'8" shipped out and should be here this weekend.  Now...this board will plane...so that might change things.  We'll see.  Will post pic's as soon as I can....
RDM absolutely...and for what you save in weight and the greater forces on the SUP you might as well just get a aluminum mast extension.  Try to grab the mast tip when you go down and swim into the set waves to keep it off the board. the extra float and the light layups of the SUP's out there will lead to rail dings and cracks....even with the mast pad on the rails....
The SF's should rock though,,,especially for luffing and stalling waiting for a set.
