Width

Got a friend who is shopping around for his first SUB.  He is a good waterman (6ft-3, 190#) looking for an alrounder in the 10-6 range to be ridden in mostly head high and occasionally bigger surf.

He can get a good deal on the Strarboard Brand of boards but every board is in the 30 plus inches wide range and wider.  Even in the shorter lengths of 9-8 and 9-0.  He is looking at their narrowest boards at 30 inch width but the length jumps from 9-8 to 11-2 with nothing in between.  To me that is a big jump in length.

The other concern is the 30 inch width.  It seems to me that the width threshold is around 28 to 28.5 inches when looking for an allround board. 

He has asked my advice regarding these dimensions and I thought I would put it up for some of the more experienced SUPers to share your thoughts.

I realize there are many other factors to consider but the 30 inch width is kinda buggin me.   Anyone put any time on these boards?

I'm 220lbs and ride a custom 10'er by 30" and the board goes really good. I'm having another one made that's 29" wide- at my size I don't see myself getting on the under 28" wide boards- too sketchy in any kind of chop. You can check the boards out at www.paddlesurf.net believe me if the boards done right, 30" is not a problem (depending on the kind of waves you surf).
