I got my new SUP. Naish 8 foot Hokua!
« on: October 21, 2009, 06:41:09 PM »
Well I got my new SUP from teh racks and I love it. Naish Hokua 8 footer. It is so lighter than my old Performer and way shorter but easy to paddle and as easy to catch waves with. I think the Performer board was too big and I could even go with a smaller one than 8 foot but this board turns and cuts back soooo easy. It feels more like a lay down surfboard and you can even break the fins free off the lips.

I can feel your stoke. Great.

Question: What 's your weight? (considering that you can also ride smaller boards)

I'm 16 years old and 145 lbs I grew 2 inches in the past year and I am 5'10". My dad is 6'2" so I can have more to grow maybe. The board is the same 8 feet one in part of that video. They all looked the same in the shop even the color of the deck pads. I have been riding it mostly at C street, Leo Carillo, Zuma and at Oxnard Shores last week on that good swell.

Hi Waterlogged. I'm the same height and weight as you, and thinking of moving from my Naish 93 to the Naish 8 footer. How did the 80 Naish go for you?

Don't forget the 8'4 alot of guys swears its one sweet surfing SUB. Saw it in the local shop and its nice and light. Alot of IGGy's surfing shapes comes in very light compare to other production models.

The 8'0" SURFS unreal - backside re-entries, carves, floats, near vertical top turns... the 8'0" can do em all. If you're a shortboarder, then this could be the board for you. The trade-off is a VERY unstable board, but it's well worth it if you ask me. Half the board is just under the water line - you're feet and ankles will be wet. Also, it's easier to constantly paddle in circles in between waves and you'll constantly be doing micro-adjustments; but, again it is well worth the effort.

Aloha... Mike

It is a great wave board but only for the lighter folks. If you weigh more than about 120lbs then its going to be a lot of work even in calm water. No chance if you weigh 180lbs as it just doesn't have the volume. I see Kai Lenny out on this board a lot  and I think he weighs in at about 110lbs. In a few years when he gains some pounds I don't think he will be able to pull it off.

I agree that 180 lbs is too much for the Naish 8'0". At 150 lbs, this board is very doable even in choppy conditions. I'm finding that in choppy conditions, a semi-submerged board actually pushes through the chop easier that a bigger more buoyant board. It's not necessarily easier, that's not what I'm saying -  but, a smaller board is not affected by chop as much as a board with more volume and float. Pushing over whitewater is also easier with a smaller board, again same effect as dealing with chop. The nose rocker and pointed nose definitely help with this. 150 lbs is within range of the Naish 8'0". In calm conditions, I feel like I could go smaller believe it or not. Here's a few pics and vid from some recent session.

Hey Waterlogged, looks like you manage the board pretty well at 150lbs. A couple of the very advanced riders over here that weigh 145lbs could hardlly even stand on the thing. I tried an  8'4 x 27 x 3 1/2 custom today and just laughed cause at 195lbs the water line was past my ankles unless I paddled it like a mad man. At least I could paddle it around without falling which was my goal. Glad you can make the 8' Hokua work for you as it totally rips in waves and would be my choice for surf if It would float me.
