resin tinting lam and hot coats?
« on: September 28, 2009, 08:23:42 PM »
Back in my PU days I'd put resin tints in the laminating coats and hot coats and got great color results, way better than what spraying the foam would get.  Can I do the same with epoxies?  I've seen the epoxy tints on fiberglass supply, so I'm guessing it's okay.

Any negative thoughts on this process?

All the colors I do on my SUP boards is resin pigment. You can use the same pigments and tints in epoxy resin as you used in poly resin. The one thing to watch out for is that epoxy yellows faster and shows up quicker in tints than solid pigments.

Byron -

Are you tinting the laminating as well as the hot coat?

Yes, I do resin pigment in both lam and hot coat. This gives you solid color and shows less yellowing over time.

I also "pigment" in both lam, hot, repairs, & finish. In this project I did was the same, there was never a mix that I didn't go without pigment in every batch.........you'll be fine.

Now as for yellowing goes.........Byron's probably right, never seen a board change color except clear.

Good luck........  :) :) :)
