Fin set up for 11'-6"
« on: November 09, 2007, 06:56:43 PM »
I'm building an 11'-6" hollow wood SUP and I'm trying to decide how to fin it.  Initially, I was planning a single 10.5" box, but now I'm seeing a lot of production boards in the same size/volume range running 2+1 fin set ups.  Examples include the Boardworks/Bill Stewart 11-6 http://www.boardworkssurf.com/shapers/bill_stewart/sup.php and the Southpoint Timpone/Kalama 11-6 http://www.surfindustries.com/products/southpointTimpone_sup.php and the C4 11-6 http://www.boardworkssurf.com/shapers/c4_waterman/sup.php  I am now thinking of adding FCS side bites to the board, and would like input from the experts on weather they are necessary or will improve performance.  If so, how should they be placed in relation to the rails and center box?

The board will be used in point break surf on small to medium waves, and generally good quality (Santa Cruz, CA).  It will also be used for cruising and fitness runs when the surf is flat.  As a point of reference, my 9-0 and 10-0 longboards both run 2+1 set ups, with cutaway fins in the center.  I like the way these boards ride at the spots I go to most often.

More details on the board project can be found here:

Hi Andy,
Would it be ok to send you a personal message?  I have a question or two about your board building and general questions about Santa Cruz surfing.

Patfly, I sent you a PM.

Anybody out there have thoughts on single vs. 2+1, and thoughts on particular fins for this set up?  Is a 7.5" center fin enough, or does it need to be in the 9-10" range on a bigger board like this, assuming side bites as well?

That board is screaming for a bigger single.  No need for the extra drag of side bites on that beauty.  This will be more of a classic ride, not a double pump bottom turner, so I would say stick to that.  My vote is for a single box.  Start with a 9-10 inch and paly around from there.

Rand, do you have any favorite single fin designs that you'd recommend for this board?  On my 10-0 longboard, I use an 8" Wingnut cutaway, but it's with FCS side bites. I like it because it's fairly loose, noserides OK and never spins out.

Sure,

A classic style fin like the SB 4 or SB 5 from here (or similar):

What about the size range to begin with?  I'm thinking 10", but perhaps that's overkill.  By the way, nice looking fins at ISD.  I dig the aloha print cloth lams.

Hi Andy,
There is really no one right answer there.  10 sounds like a great starting point, but borrow a 9 as well and move 'em both around in the box.  Amazing how much difference you will feel with even subtle changes, and not always what you might expect.
