Advice for basic repairs
« on: July 12, 2009, 10:48:14 AM »
Aloha,

Two months into paddling and so hooked, can't believe the addiction.  Couple of questions, first I have a Jimmy Lewis 10'6'' all around board.  My paddling style is not very smooth yet and now the rails are starting to look like a star filled evening on Maui.  Broken chips on the rails, the board is blue so I was wondering if I should use epoxy with blue pigment to fix these.  My younger days were filled with many surfboard repairs but was not sure about the coat on this board, looks like paint chipping, not the normal spider web cracking on surfboards.  It is not leaking, just looks funky.

Second question, sorry hope I am not boring everyone, my QB paddle has a 1 inch slice in the backside, not even sure how it happened???, soft to the push and will leak.  What's the best way to fill this, this is a carbon fiber blade. Use epoxy or even some old surfboard resin I have.  Mahalo for any advice.

chip to the gel coat (the top colour layer on an epoxy over eps board)
are pretty standard - fill hem with epoxy resin or glue - colour match if you can

use a paddle guard or tape the edges

also use rail tape - clear tape for bikes (and helicopter blades) works well
as it can be removed easily when needed

for the paddle the same use epoxy filler - add some fibreglass mat for
extra stregnth
