Outline, rails & rocker for a dedicated noserider board
« on: May 19, 2009, 08:54:49 AM »
Ok folks, I need some advice at this matter. I’ve considered ordering a custom shaped SUP board as at this point I haven’t succeeded a decent noseriding on my boards… When I say noseriding, I mean wrapping the 5 or 10 fingers, not a cheater five nor front end camping (Those tricks I can do on all my SUP boards).

I’m not an expert on noseriding but I do understand the technique involved and I can apply these technique in my classic longboard and get to the nose. I’m not sure why I cannot perform a decent noseriding on a SUP board but I think it’s gotta be the lots of buoyancy those boards have and the concentration of volume in the middle of the board.

Buoyancy. This is something desired for paddling at a stand up stance but when it comes to noseriding I have a hard time to sink the tail of a SUP board in order to generate lift in the nose. Without that proper lift in the nose, generated by water flowing across the board towards the tail (sunk in the water), my noserides attempts went off in no time.

Distribution of Volume. This concept, which I once heard was called “cockpit concept” is IMHO the other characteristic of a SUP board that works against noseriding as volume is concentrated in the middle of the board and SUP boards need to be thick (4-1/2 is the thinner board I have and 4-7/8” is the thicker).

Ok, so I’ve settled my goal: Noseriding (I’m willing to throw everything away to get maximum lift at the nose). I weigh 200lbs. and the board will be ridden only in glassy conditions. So my questions are: - What is the minimum volume I aim for a board like this? Same for thickness: should it be concentrated in the middle of the board (more rocker from tail to nose) or should it be equally distributed along the outline of the board (flat rocker)? Concave on the nose or rails down in the front end? Any particular length and width suggested?

Mahalo from Brazil,
Bob.

Bob- I hesitate to give you advice based on theory when the testing is so expensive. I think you are on to it with down-turned nose rails. There is a thread over at Swaylock"s right now that discusses a board built by Dennis Ryder that has the rails shape reversed between nose and tail that you should read.

Is this the thread?

http://www2.swaylocks.com/forums/my-new-penatrator

That board reminds me of James MacLaren in youtube: The Physics of Noseriding... Great board, BTW...

Yeah, that's the one. Sorry for the late reply, I've been out of town.
