Peyote Rocked
« on: May 18, 2009, 09:27:41 PM »
I got my wacky little racecar back from my friend Tony Garmey's Horizon Racing shop where it was undergoing a little face lift prior to its fiftieth season of racing. Two years ago a Corvette at Watkins Glen used it as a hood ornament http://www.allaluminumtour.com/?p=263, I wound up having to replace the frame, and eventually most of the body panels. It looked pretty good last year, except for a fairly lumpy rear end. That wouldn't do for Peyote's fiftieth birthday, so Tony fettled the whole car over the winter and it looks absolutely spectacular.

Not only that but it ran great too. It gained about 30 pounds in the process of being rebuilt, but didn't show it, turning a 1:39:454 at Pacific Raceways, setting the fastest lap in it's group even though the best finish was third.

Probably not many of you care that much about racing, but I'm just about as nuts about that as I am about SUP. Going to be a good year. Weekend after next is the Wine Country Classic as Sears Point (Infineon), always a great race. I'm looking forward to it. I bring boards along in case there's a chance to get in the water.

I didn't see Monaco until this morning--I went fly fishing with friends at a very remote set of lakes over the weekend.  Watched the qualifying last night and then the race this morning, though without my traditional extreme Monaco breakfast. What a great race. I can't imagine racing there, just insane distractions and no room for error.

Gotta hand it to Jenson Button, after a lot of years in the wrong car he's finally got a chance to really shine. And another Brawn GP 1-2! You couldn't write this story as fiction--people would say you didn't know anything about racing.  Nice to see Ferrari back in the hunt. I've got to go to Monaco for a GP sometime before I kick.

Raced Peyote at Infinion (Sears Point in Sonoma, California) this weekend at the Wine Country Classic. Peyote did great right up until the checker on Sunday's warmup when my clutch went away.  I had a spare clutch pack with me, and decided to do the loony in-the-paddock-extreme-repair and put it in, but it's a double spline type, and I didn't have an input shaft with me, so I couldn't index it. With about 40 minutes left before the green flag I gave up trying to wiggle the transmission on, pulled the clutch off and stuck the transmission back on to put it back in the trailer. Too bad, I was slow on Saturday in the qualifying race (14th out of 40) but had the bit between my teeth during the warmup on Sunday and was running with the three leaders.  I think it would have been a fun race.

A long tow--about ten hours each way, hauling my 34' airstream--Nero. But it was a great weekend at the races and a fine ride back in a warm California haze with good music blasting. Sang pretty much all the way back to Portland. A little hoarse and a little sunburned.
