Paddle Signals
« on: May 18, 2009, 05:52:37 AM »
Anybody standardized signalling with your paddle to your buds yet?

1) "It's good here, c'mon over"

2) "I'm, done/outta here"  etc

The other day my bud holds his paddle straight blade up high....after i made a drop and  wipe out.....have no idea what he was trying to say, but it just seems like someone should have worked out a "code" by this time
   2 paddles could do semaphore?
Too many for the rack
Some in the shack
Some under decks
Some have straps

Here are some of the paddle signs that I'm aware of:

Attention!............ waving paddle back and forth overhead.
I'm okay............... Put your hand on top of your head (or repeatedly pat your head)
All is fine.............. Raise paddle horizontally above your head
Stop!................... Repeatedly raise and lower the paddle horizontally above your head
Go this direction..... Spear jab (act like throwing) the paddle in the direction intended (works only for left or right)

*note: Receiver should respond with the same signal to acknowledge the sender.

Paddle blade vertical behind your head means a shark is cruising thru the lineup.

don't know if there is a sign depicted by a spinning paddle but if there isn't we could make up something at this point like:

imminent danger! get out of the water (return to the beach)
or...
you are endangering yourself and others.
or...
i just peed on my board.
whoever invented the hole... knew nothing.

I'm starting to use a signal for other surfers when I'm in the lineup, that I use when I want to pass on a wave (or because I'm trying to be nice and give it other surfers even though it might be "my" turn) - and what I do is hold my paddle down at my sides in both hands, parallel to the ocean as the wave approaches. It's kind-of a "resting" mode image, and then the other surfers can set up for the wave.

I like Deb's signal, and use something similar to it. If I am on the outside and see a wave coming that i want to give away to the regular surfers, I raise both hands over my head, with the paddle :) , to let the other surfers know that I am not going and it is wide open for them. Kind of like you do in a bank robbery when the say" its a robbery, hands up. "

I will also use my paddle to point out a wave coming to one of them and tell them a good one is over there; I can see it way earlier than them. They seem to like the head's up.
