Insta360 3x for Christmas
« on: February 13, 2023, 04:20:47 PM »
I've played with it twice - I'm still figuring out how I want to mount it. Tried a waist mount - SUP stroke engages the hips - and it's too much swinging around even for this amazing stabilization technology - basically the scene is stable and I wobble back and forth in it. I put it on a pole on the board - this is better - but still whips the camera back and forth a couple of feet. I think I need a weighted "steady cam selfie-stick" - so the camera is more or less in place while the board tips back and forth. This is partly due to primary instability vs secondary, I think. I love the Joe Bark secondary - I had no idea I was constantly wobbling like this :D. I think I need the blue-tooth remote - there is just SO MUCH VIDEO in a 360 - I can't deal with it. I used to like my Blackberry videos :D I had like, 10 seconds at a time - that was it. Very good for focusing on what you really want. I think it's going to do what I want - be a drone that follows me around but doesn't fall in and destroy itself if I don't watch it.

First attempt. 7 minutes - I cut it down from about 45 minutes :D I will say  -  there is a spot where the camera is not quite clearing a walking bridge - and there are 3 cuts I made of that - coming at it, hitting it, going through - same event, looking to the side - same event - looking back. This camera is getting ALL directions, all the time. I need to learn to take advantage of that .

2nd attempt - board mounted. 9 minutes. More jumping ahead with the zoom-bar I'm sure.  Yes - this is the same place :D For those who are new - I have only one place with liquid water close by, else it's go to the northernmost ice-free port in America (at the time the Army opened it in the 1940s, anyway :D) in Whittier, Alaska. For me - that's about 2.5 hours or so away, depending on tunnel schedule - so most of my winter paddling is spent here at Eklutna Tailrace / Knik River. It's pretty. It trains me in cold-weather paddling in a "relatively safe" scenario.

Oh - I got a new drysuit this year. I had a tear at a seam in my O'Neal and I realized - if I fell in a mile or so downstream at -20f, and this tore, I'd be in deep sh*t. Kokatat Brand (and actual GoreTex)  - it isn't Kevlar or anything - but the build quality is very high and it's much tougher than the O'Neal. Also they have a size King above 3X and 4X :D Seems to be almost custom for a guy like me. Loose and comfy everywhere but the calves. I waded in up to my chest after my paddle yesterday, to confirm it is as non-leaky as a thought. My boots do take on a bit of water - but with built-in sock-feet in the drysuit this is less of an issue. Temps were not extreme and I was headed home - this was not a test of paddling upstream for an hour at -15 - which would be less fun. It was in the 20's, and I didn't use mittens, just gloves. Spares on board as usual - hat, mittens, more gloves and I turned up my Bivy  - this time I went for the 1 year contract - at $15 a month, having the option of "Call out the rescue" with GPS location is worth it to me. And I have unlimited "Hey - I'm fine" type messages and it happens to also have GPS data in that. Pretty great, I think.

Grabbed a few photos to let you avoid the video :D I don't watch a lot of video either, lol. Last 3 are just phone pics.

And I gripe when it's below 70. 😅

Beautiful scene man. And yeah, no one will watch 9 min of paddling. However since you probably have a good bit of indoor time, read up on how to shoot to tell a story.

Short shots of loading the gear, driving to the spot, getting in, then a little highlight reel of the prettiest or most interesting stuff will make a compelling 2-3 min video that anyone who digs paddling might enjoy.

I end up watching the beginning of most surf videos when they are showing the spot and the area around it as much as the 5 min of "surf porn" as they call it. You've got quite an unusual setup there. Love to see more of it.

Edit: I guess I should add that this is based on working in media & entertainment for 25 years. Sorry if it's unsolicited advice, but the pics are super interesting.

Naw 😊 I figured y'all would use the zoom bar but I see Google doesn't preview. 7 minutes chopped to a couple minutes and YouTube which does preview and zoom along. Better  :)

Thanks Erik, it's always interesting to see different cams and mounts!
I like the dedication to the snow slog just to get to the water :D
To me that is a great indicator of passion for the sport.
I know that when you are out there, it is amazing!! Nothing quite like a snow paddle.... so quiet and serene.

Yup... you are out there on your own, so thoughtful preparation is absolutely necessary to avoid becoming a statistic. It's great that you spell out your pre-paddle  gear, so people will know how they should approach this type of outing

The last video seemed clearer and more precise, so that works!

Keep wandering the frozen north... we will keep watching!

Yes, thanks,  I'm a fan of your intrepid super natural winter reporting.  Feels like I'm there without freezing my ass off...

Thanks for slogging thru Creek. :)

I think I can make a weighted steady cam pole type of thing. Or....just a helmet mount maybe. The head is petty steady lol.

Drone video of Tailrace. Very pretty. Short I promise 😆

Ok 2 and 1/2 minutes and it's YouTube so slide gets you the ability to skip. I might need to combine the 2nd outing eurh this , there are some better angles in that video. This is all from the belt mounted camera stick. https://youtu.be/cEWS6zhvIbk

Another short video. It's not an especially interesting day. But I tried some different angles and views, and went with the square format. From the raw footage you can select different aspect ratios as well as the different directions.  Lo
Looking ahead then to the side just takes two edits, and if an eagle happens to fly overhead,  you can go get that view as well. The electronic stabilization is amazing.  Only the waist belt mount is able to overcome the stabilizer,  and even then, the landscape holds level, but I wave back and forth across the screen instead,  unless I really focus on paddling "wrong" and isolate the stroke to my arms. I stuck it wayyyy out front by wrapping my waist mount around the board.  Great for working out, I'm sure. 😀 But inspired of bouncing around on the end of a flexy selfie stick, the image is stable, and not the typical GoPro shot of the paddler looming overhead.  A long board helps but a shorter one would work , just have the camera 3 feet out over the water. I am sure it would be neat for you surfers. So. 3 minutes, and just bail out at 2 minutes if you'd rather not watch me draf the board back to the car 😀. All you flatwater paddlers will like how I slide over a bunch  of branches with my flip-up kayak fin (skeg? If not steering? ). https://youtu.be/mdsJ0gtPiS0

Very nice. And super natural as always.  And I never thought about pulling a board over snow. Never HAD to think about it : )
